Iris refused to dismiss him immediately.
“I want the truth before another person chooses what I am allowed to know.”
Independent counsel remained beside her while Marcus testified under oath.
The five-million-dollar account used his identity but not his current biometric data. It relied on scans taken during his employment at Vale Meridian.
The initial deposit came from a company called Hale Legal Recovery.
Marcus had formed that company twelve years earlier to manage settlements for injured patients.
He dissolved it after discovering Julian used a related medical charity to route corporate payments.
“I should have audited every remaining account,” Marcus said.
“You should have told me,” Iris answered.
“Yes.”
The account’s withdrawals paid three people.
Preston Shaw.
Dr. Elias Voss.
And Eva Mercer.
Eva received monthly transfers even while supposedly confined.
Julian smiled.
“Your missing assistant was being paid.”
Marcus examined the destination.
The money did not enter Eva’s personal bank. It went to a secure storage company operating private evidence lockers.
Eva had been funding an archive.
The locker required two keys.
One belonged to Eva.
The second belonged to Iris.
Marcus handed her a small brass key removed from the sealed evidence folder.
“Eva mailed this to my office before she disappeared.”
“You kept it for six months?”
“I received it three days ago. The package had been held by a dead-man delivery service. It released when Vale Meridian filed the divorce ownership claim.”
Eva designed the archive to open only when Julian publicly asserted control.
The divorce triggered it.
Federal investigators accessed the locker remotely with Iris’s authorization.
Inside were original clinic videos, unaltered company ledgers, copies of Voss’s letters, and a device labeled:
IF MARCUS IS ACCUSED.
The first file showed Marcus meeting Dr. Voss outside St. Arden.
Voss handed him the stolen biometric token.
“You need to make them think Julian still controls it,” Voss said.
Marcus replied, “I will not let him use Iris’s file.”
The video was dated after Marcus reported the token stolen.
“You recovered it,” Iris said.
“For eleven minutes.”
Marcus explained that Voss contacted him secretly. The physician had begun cooperating with Julian after threats were made against his husband. He later realized Iris might die inside the clinic.
Voss gave Marcus the token so he could copy its logs.
Marcus returned it because Voss claimed Julian monitored every object leaving St. Arden.
“You put it back into the system?”
“Yes.”
“That allowed them to use it again.”
“I believed the copied logs would expose the clinic.”
“You risked me for evidence.”
Marcus looked toward the floor.
“Yes.”
Another protector had decided documentation justified delay.
Iris’s face hardened.
Marcus did not defend the choice.
Eva’s archive contained proof that the five-million-dollar account was built as a trap. Julian instructed Preston to create a financial trail tying Marcus to St. Arden.
The final transfer into Eva’s evidence lockers was hidden within that trail.
Eva used Julian’s own framing money to preserve the truth.
Judge Lang asked whether the archive showed Eva’s current location.
One folder contained a route map from Hale Ridge to the courthouse.
A live tracker blinked inside the building.
Eva had entered the courthouse before the hearing.
Court security searched public areas.
The tracker moved upward.
It stopped above Judge Lang’s courtroom.
The building plans showed an unused records loft behind the ceiling.
Officers opened the access panel.
They found a blood-stained scarf, a broken phone, and Eva’s tracker.
No Eva.
A handwritten note had been taped to the beam:

THE VOICE RECORDER HAS TWO TRACKS. PLAY THE ONE IRIS WAS NEVER MEANT TO HEAR.
