Chapter 10 - the memories inside Sophie
Sophie opened her eyes in a room she had never seen.
The walls were pale blue. A toy train circled the floor. Two boys sat at a table while a woman in red shoes placed photographs in front of them.
One photograph showed a family.
“This is your mother,” the woman said.
Both boys repeated the name.
“Victoria.”
“Again.”
“Victoria.”
Sophie tried to step closer, but no one noticed her.
She was not physically inside the room.
She was seeing a memory.
One boy had Ethan’s gray eyes. The other resembled Miles.
A third child stood behind the observation glass.
Daniel.
The scene changed.
Ethan was older, perhaps eight. He held a key while smoke filled a corridor.
A boy screamed behind a locked door.
“Open it!”
Young Ethan cried.
Victoria crouched beside him.
“If you open that door, he will take your name, your home, and your mother.”
The boy behind the door struck the glass.
Ethan dropped the key into a drain.
Flames rose.
Sophie screamed.
She woke on the laboratory floor in Laura’s arms.
Ethan knelt nearby.
“What did you see?”
Sophie looked at him with terror.
“You left the boy.”
Ethan closed his eyes.
Victoria watched from behind the transparent barrier.
“The process works.”
Laura shouted, “She is not an experiment!”
“She is a bridge. Her genetic markers connect Daniel’s memory retention with Ethan’s conditioning profile.”
Miles aimed his weapon at the control console.
“Lower the barrier.”
Victoria did not move.
“If you shoot, the laboratory locks permanently.”
“Then we die together.”
“You have never been willing to die for anyone.”
Miles looked at Sophie.
“Maybe I finally found someone worth disappointing you for.”
He fired.
The console exploded.
Emergency lights flashed.
The transparent barrier lowered halfway before stopping.
Daniel crawled beneath it.
Ethan followed.
Miles remained on the opposite side, covering them as armed guards entered from a rear corridor.
Gunfire erupted.
Rebecca pulled Nora and Laura toward the exit. Daniel carried Sophie.
Ethan climbed onto the platform and seized Victoria’s arm.
She struck him with a hidden blade.
The knife cut across his side.
He held on.
“You built my entire life from lies.”
“I gave you a life.”
“You taught a child to murder.”
“I taught you to survive.”
Ethan looked at her red shoes.
Sophie had remembered them because Victoria had been present during every major trauma.
“You ordered Laura’s abduction.”
“She threatened the network.”
“You imprisoned Daniel.”
“He refused to cooperate.”
“You used Miles.”
Victoria smiled.
“You still think he wants to save you?”
Across the room, Miles shot two guards.
Then he aimed at Ethan.
For a moment, neither brother moved.
Victoria whispered, “Only one of you ever leaves.”
The old conditioning.
The final evaluation.
Ethan saw it in Miles’s eyes.
Miles saw it in his.
Then Sophie’s voice rose through the laboratory.
“You don’t have to listen to her!”
The sentence broke something.
Miles turned the gun and shot the final guard instead.
Ethan shoved Victoria against the damaged console.
“You lose.”
“No,” she replied. “I finally activated the archive.”
Every monitor illuminated.
Videos began uploading to remote servers.
The footage showed Ethan locking the child inside the burning room.
It showed Miles moving abducted children.
It showed Laura signing fraudulent records.
It showed Daniel undergoing experiments.
Each clip had been edited to remove coercion and context.
Victoria intended to expose them as the criminals while presenting herself as the whistleblower.
Rebecca examined the upload.
“She’s sending it to law enforcement and every major news network.”
“Stop it,” Ethan said.
“I can’t. The servers are distributed.”
Victoria laughed.
“By morning, the world will know Ethan Cole built a child-replacement program beneath his mansion.”
Sirens sounded outside.
Helicopters approached over the bay.
Victoria had called the authorities herself.
Sophie cried out again.
Another memory seized her.
She saw Laura standing beside Victoria months earlier.
The two women spoke privately inside the mansion.
Laura handed Victoria a folder.
Sophie awakened, staring at her mother.
“You knew the lady with the red shoes.”
Laura froze.
Daniel looked at her.
“What is she talking about?”
Sophie’s voice trembled.
“Mommy gave her the rabbit.”
Everyone turned toward Laura.
Victoria smiled.
