Chapter 3 - the man in Ethan’s hallway

Wade’s footsteps stopped outside the guest room.
“Mr. Cole?”
Ethan stood beside the door with the pistol held low against his leg.
Nora crouched behind the bed with Sophie. The little girl pressed both hands over the stuffed rabbit’s mouth as though afraid the toy might betray them.
“Why did you disconnect the security network?” Wade asked.
Ethan did not answer.
The brass handle moved.
Locked.
Wade tested it again.
“I received an alert about an unauthorized person on the property.”
Ethan looked through the narrow gap between the curtain and the window.
The headlights beyond the gate had disappeared.
A black SUV now waited beneath the trees beside the cliff road.
“You told me no one entered,” Ethan called.
“I was mistaken.”
“Were you also mistaken when you drove Sophie Reed to a house with a green roof?”
Silence filled the hallway.
Then Wade’s voice changed.
“You should not have said her name.”
The door shook under a violent impact.
Nora pulled Sophie farther back.
Ethan fired once through the lower panel.
Wade cursed.
The footsteps retreated.
“Stay here,” Ethan told Nora.
“You can’t go alone.”
“I know this house better than he does.”
Sophie shook her head.
“No. He knows the secret stairs.”
Ethan stopped.
“What secret stairs?”
“The ones behind the books.”
His father had designed Black Harbor Estate with concealed service passages, but Ethan believed most had been sealed during renovations.
“How do you know?”
“Wade showed Miles.”
A second crash came from the floor below.
Ethan crossed to the built-in bookcase beside the fireplace. He pulled the bronze sculpture on the third shelf.
Nothing happened.
Sophie pointed.
“The blue book.”
He pressed its spine.
The entire bookcase swung outward, revealing a narrow staircase descending into darkness.
A shape moved below.
Ethan aimed.
Wade fired first.
The bullet struck the wall beside Ethan’s head, spraying plaster across the room.
Nora screamed.
Ethan returned fire.
Wade disappeared down the passage.
“Call Dr. Walsh,” Ethan ordered. “Tell him not to enter the property.”
Nora checked her phone.
“No signal.”
The jammer in the black SUV had already activated.
Ethan closed the hidden door and pushed a heavy chair against it.
Then he heard an engine in the courtyard.
Through the rain-streaked window, he saw Wade’s truck racing toward the western gate. The iron barrier opened remotely, even though Ethan had disconnected the network.
Someone else controlled the estate.
Wade escaped into the storm.
The black SUV followed.
Ethan lowered the weapon.
Sophie stared at the hole in the wall.
“He’s going to tell Miles.”
“Tell him what?”
“That I found the rabbit.”
Ethan placed the brass key and folded paper inside his coat.
“What is at Point Delmar?”
Sophie blinked.
He showed her the lighthouse symbol.
“Did your mother ever take you there?”
“No. But she talked about a room under the ocean.”
Nora rose slowly.
“Ethan, we need to leave.”
“The road is probably watched.”
“There’s the old boat dock.”
“The cliffs are too dangerous in this storm.”
A light flashed three times beyond the glass.
Not lightning.
A signal from the rocks below.
Ethan moved to the window.
A figure stood near the lower path, holding a flashlight.
Three short flashes.
Two long.
Three short.
An old Cole family emergency code.
Rebecca.
Ethan opened a locked drawer and retrieved a handheld radio that operated on an isolated analog frequency.
“Rebecca?”
Static crackled.
Then her voice answered.
“I’m below the south terrace. Do not use the driveway. Wade has men at both gates.”
“How did you get here?”
“Your father’s tunnel.”
Ethan looked toward the concealed staircase.
“My father’s passages were sealed.”
“No. You were told they were sealed.”
The storm continued battering the windows.
“Where is Dr. Walsh?”
“He never made it. His car was found abandoned two miles away.”
Nora gripped the bedpost.
Sophie did not react.
That frightened Ethan more than tears would have.
“Rebecca, what did Laura uncover?”
“Not over the radio.”
“People are inside my house.”
“I know. They have used Black Harbor as a transit site for years.”
Ethan looked around the luxurious guest room.
“Transit for what?”
Rebecca’s answer came through a burst of static.
“Money, identities, and children.”
Sophie pressed her face into the rabbit.
Ethan’s stomach turned.
His charitable foundation funded shelters, foster programs, and medical services across California. If someone had used those systems to move vulnerable children, his name would have protected them.
His wealth had not merely failed to stop the crime.
It may have hidden it.
Rebecca continued.
“Laura discovered that missing children were being assigned identities belonging to dead beneficiaries of your foundation. The records led to Point Delmar.”
Ethan closed his eyes.
“How many?”
“At least thirty-two.”
Nora whispered a prayer.
“Laura copied everything,” Rebecca said. “The key Sophie carried may unlock the physical archive.”
A new sound rose beneath the storm.
Dogs barking.
Not from the empty doghouse.
From the forest beyond the estate.
Search dogs.
Sophie climbed off the bed.
“They’re coming.”
Ethan turned.
“You’re not going anywhere.”
“They’ll hurt everyone if I stay.”
“That is not your responsibility.”
“It was Mommy’s.”
The words struck him.
Laura had spent months carrying the responsibility alone because she had not trusted Ethan enough to tell him directly.
Or because someone had prevented her.
Rebecca’s voice returned.
“Take Sophie through the passage. Meet me at the lower tunnel.”
“What about Nora?”
“I’m not leaving the child,” Nora said.
The hidden bookcase suddenly moved.
The chair scraped across the floor.
Someone pushed from the other side.
Ethan raised the pistol.
Sophie held up the stuffed rabbit.
A tiny red light blinked inside its missing eye.
The toy was transmitting.
A man’s voice came from the hallway speaker.
“Mara—no, Sophie. Bring me the rabbit, and I’ll let your mother live.”
Sophie’s face collapsed.
“Miles.”
Ethan moved between her and the door.
The man outside laughed.
May you like
“Mr. Cole, you have spent years pretending your fortune saves people. Tonight you will learn what it purchased.”
👉 Miles had surrounded the mansion and claimed Laura was still alive, but rescuing her would require Ethan to enter the criminal network built beneath his own family legacy.
