Chapter 13 - the family Victoria erased

Ethan listened to the stuffed wolf recording three times.

Each repetition made the truth harder, not easier.

The child’s voice described a family in Fresno: a mother named Catherine Reed, an older brother named Daniel, and a baby who died before Ethan could remember him. After Catherine disappeared, the boys entered state care.

Daniel had been ten.

Matthew—later renamed Ethan—had been five.

Charles Cole’s program selected both children.

Daniel resisted conditioning and escaped as a teenager. Matthew remained, survived the Point Delmar fire, and became Ethan Cole.

Miles had come from another family entirely.

The resemblance between them had been enhanced through surgery, hormones, and years of behavioral training.

“You said we were brothers,” Ethan told Miles.

“I believed what Victoria told me.”

Everyone had been given a different lie.

Daniel stood near the archive shelves.

“I returned for you after I escaped. Point Delmar had burned. Victoria showed me a death certificate with your original name.”

“So you believed I was dead.”

“Until seven years ago.”

“What happened then?”

“I saw you speaking at a foundation event. You used a phrase our mother used to say.”

Ethan remembered the phrase.

An empty room is still a room waiting for someone.

He had repeated it during speeches about housing vulnerable children.

“I contacted Victoria,” Daniel continued. “She promised to arrange a meeting. Instead, she imprisoned me.”

Laura took his hand.

“Why didn’t you tell me about Matthew before?”

“I thought he was dead when we met. Later, every message I sent from the prison was controlled.”

Sophie watched the adults.

She did not remember Daniel as her father, but she seemed to recognize the pain in his voice.

Ethan searched the archive for Catherine Reed.

Her file was missing.

Rebecca found a registry listing.

CATHERINE REED — STATUS TRANSFERRED.

Destination: Harbor Mercy Medical Center.

Nora looked up.

“That hospital closed twenty years ago.”

Ethan knew the property.

It had been converted into a luxury rehabilitation clinic operated by the Cole Foundation.

The same mountain facility where several private donors received confidential treatment.

Rebecca contacted Judge Morrison and requested a search warrant.

His assistant answered.

The judge had been hospitalized after a sudden stroke.

Senator Cross was already moving.

“We cannot wait for a warrant,” Ethan said.

“You are under investigation,” Rebecca reminded him. “Entering foundation property will be presented as evidence tampering.”

“My mother may be alive.”

“So may dozens of other people.”

A federal officer approached.

“Mr. Cole, we intercepted a vehicle leaving the estate through the south service road.”

“Who was inside?”

“No driver. Only a package.”

The box contained a red shoe and a burner phone.

The phone rang.

Ethan answered.

Victoria’s voice came through clearly.

“You opened Charles’s grave.”

“You knew we would.”

“I knew Sophie would.”

“Where is Catherine Reed?”

“Still asking the wrong question.”

“What question should I ask?”

“Why did Catherine surrender her sons willingly?”

Daniel grabbed the phone.

“She did not.”

Victoria laughed.

“She signed the transfer documents.”

“Under threat.”

“Ask Ethan whether Laura’s left-handed signature mattered once the official record was created.”

Laura looked away.

Coerced signatures still destroyed lives when powerful institutions accepted them.

Victoria continued.

“Catherine did not lose you. She sold access to your genetic profile.”

Ethan felt nauseated.

“I don’t believe you.”

“You will when you see her.”

“Where?”

“Harbor Mercy.”

The line ended.

It was too obvious.

A trap placed inside a truth.

They prepared to leave anyway.

Rebecca arranged a private ambulance for Sophie and a separate vehicle for Ethan, Laura, Daniel, and two trusted federal officers. Miles remained in custody at the estate.

Before they departed, he called Ethan over.

“Victoria will expect you to approach through the main road.”

“What do you suggest?”

“There is an abandoned water tunnel beneath the clinic.”

“How do you know?”

“She kept me there after Point Delmar.”

“Were you treated?”

Miles smiled without humor.

“We were all treated.”

He gave Ethan a sequence of numbers.

“The tunnel entrance is beneath the old pumping station. The code opens the lower ward.”

Ethan studied him.

“Why help me?”

“Because if Catherine is alive, she may know my real name too.”

The ambulance reached the mountain facility after dark.

Sophie had insisted on coming because the registry might respond only to her transferred memories. Laura stayed beside her.

Ethan and Daniel entered through the water tunnel.

The code opened a steel gate.

Beyond it stretched a hospital corridor preserved exactly as it had been twenty years earlier.

Beds lined both walls.

People lay sleeping beneath white blankets.

Some were adults.

Others were elderly.

Each wore a bracelet containing a stolen name.

Daniel stopped beside one woman.

Her silver hair spread across the pillow. Though age had changed her face, he recognized the small crescent-shaped scar beneath her ear.

“Mom.”

Catherine Reed opened her eyes.

She looked first at Daniel.

Then at Ethan.

Tears filled them.

“My boys.”

Ethan stepped closer.

“Did you sell us?”

Her expression twisted.

“No.”

“Victoria says you signed the transfer.”

“I signed because they had already taken you.”

Daniel touched her hand.

“What did they want from our family?”

Catherine looked toward Sophie in the doorway.

“They wanted the children born after you.”

Sophie moved closer to Laura.

“Why?”

“Because your family remembers without machines.”

A fire alarm suddenly activated.

Red lights filled the ward.

Catherine gripped Ethan’s wrist.

“Victoria is not trying to transfer memories into Sophie.”

“What is she doing?”

“She is using Sophie to wake every conditioned subject at once.”

Across the ward, sleeping patients began opening their eyes.

Every one of them turned toward Sophie.

Then they spoke in perfect unison.

“Bring us home.”

👉 Catherine revealed Sophie was activating an entire generation of conditioned survivors, and hundreds of stolen identities had just awakened with a single command.
