Chapter 11 - Laura’s bargain

Daniel stepped away from Laura.
“You worked with her.”
“No.”
“Sophie saw you.”
Laura looked at her daughter.
“What else did you see?”
“You gave her my rabbit.”
Laura closed her eyes.
“I gave Victoria a copy.”
Ethan held one hand against the cut in his side.
“A copy of what?”
“The Point Delmar records.”
Rebecca stared at her.
“You told me you never reached the full archive.”
“I lied.”
The sirens outside grew louder.
Federal helicopters circled the mansion while Victoria’s edited videos continued spreading.
Laura spoke quickly.
“Eight months ago, I discovered Sophie’s name on the transfer list. I contacted Victoria because I believed she was another victim of Charles Cole.”
Victoria laughed.
“You believed exactly what I needed you to believe.”
“She told me Miles had taken over the network. She promised to protect Sophie if I gave her the archive.”
Daniel’s face hardened.
“You trusted the woman who imprisoned me?”
“I believed you were dead.”
“You never looked.”
“I searched for seven years!”
“Then you moved Miles into our home.”
Laura recoiled.
“He approached us under a different name. He said he had evidence about your death.”
Miles lowered his weapon.
“I was ordered to monitor her.”
“Did you become Sophie’s stepfather on Victoria’s orders?” Ethan asked.
“At first.”
Laura looked at him with disgust.
“At first?”
Miles’s expression tightened.
“I cared about Sophie.”
“You drugged me and took us to the green house.”
“Because Victoria threatened to kill Daniel.”
Laura laughed bitterly.
“You expect me to believe you knew he was alive?”
“I learned four days ago.”
Daniel looked between them.
Every relationship had been constructed through partial truths.
Victoria pressed a hidden switch.
A section of the laboratory floor opened behind her, revealing a private elevator.
Ethan grabbed her before she reached it.
She drove the blade deeper into his injured side.
He collapsed.
Victoria entered the elevator.
The doors closed.
Miles fired, but the bullets struck reinforced steel.
“She’s going to the helipad,” he said.
Rebecca checked her phone.
“The authorities are demanding entry.”
“Are they legitimate?” Nora asked.
“Some are. Some may belong to Victoria.”
Daniel lifted Sophie.
“We need medical help.”
The child’s fever was rising. Her eyes moved rapidly beneath half-closed lids as foreign memories continued flooding her mind.
Laura touched her forehead.
“The compound is accelerating.”
“Can it be reversed?” Ethan asked.
Daniel looked toward the medical wing.
“The original researchers used a counteragent.”
“Where?”
“Cold storage beneath the lighthouse.”
Point Delmar.
They had left it behind.
Miles shook his head.
“Victoria would have removed it.”
Sophie opened her eyes.
“The medicine is here.”
Everyone looked at her.
“How do you know?” Laura asked.
“I remember a man hiding it.”
“Who?”
Sophie pointed at Ethan.
Not the adult Ethan.
The child inside the memory.
Ethan forced himself upright.
“Where did I hide it?”
“In the room with Christmas.”
They returned through the corridor of artificial family rooms.
The Christmas room remained exactly as before: decorated tree, wrapped boxes, stockings, and a fake fireplace.
Sophie pointed to a red train beneath the tree.
Ethan knelt and opened its engine compartment.
Inside were three sealed vials.
Daniel examined the faded labels.
“Counteragent Seven.”
“Will it hurt her?” Laura asked.
“It may stop the memory transfer. It may also erase recent memories.”
Sophie heard him.
“Will I forget Mommy?”
Laura began crying.
“No.”
Daniel did not lie.
“We don’t know.”
Sophie looked at Ethan.
“Will I forget the boy in the fire?”
“Maybe.”
“Then nobody will tell what happened.”
Ethan knelt despite the pain in his side.
“I will.”
“You forgot before.”
“I won’t choose to forget again.”
Sophie studied him.
Then she held out her arm.
“Do it.”
Daniel injected the counteragent.
Sophie gasped.
Her body went rigid, then relaxed in Laura’s arms.
The rabbit’s remaining eye stopped flashing.
Outside, a loudspeaker announced that federal agents were entering the estate.
Rebecca opened a secure line to a judge she trusted.
“Evidence packets have been received. We have temporary protection, but the video has already gone public.”
Ethan’s phone displayed dozens of news alerts.
MILLIONAIRE’S SECRET CHILD LAB DISCOVERED.
COLE FOUNDATION LINKED TO MISSING CHILDREN.
The world had already accepted Victoria’s version.
Nora looked through the laboratory window.
“She’s on the helipad.”
Victoria stood beside a white helicopter.
A second person waited with her.
A man in a dark suit.
Ethan recognized him as Senator Benjamin Cross, chairman of the federal committee investigating child trafficking.
The official who had publicly praised the Cole Foundation for years.
Rebecca stared.
“He is one of the people receiving our evidence.”
“He received it first so he could control the investigation,” Laura said.
The helicopter lifted from the estate.
Before it disappeared over the ocean, Sophie opened her eyes.
“Mommy?”
Laura held her.
“I’m here.”
Sophie looked around.
She recognized everyone.
Relief moved through the room.
Then she stared at Daniel.
“Who is that man?”
Laura’s relief vanished.
The counteragent had not erased Sophie’s mother.
It had erased her father.
Daniel stepped backward as though struck.
Sophie touched the injection mark.
“The lady said one memory had to disappear.”
Ethan looked toward the empty sky where Victoria had escaped.
She had designed the counteragent too.
May you like
And she had chosen its price.
👉 Sophie survived the memory transfer but forgot her own father, while Victoria escaped with the senator assigned to investigate the crimes.
