Chapter 3 - THE KITCHENThe scars came from boiling water.

Not fire.

Not an explosion.

Not a mysterious accident.

A stockpot.

Eighteen months before I filed for divorce, I came home early from a supplier meeting.

Jason was in our kitchen.

Angry.

His laptop sat open.

On the screen was an email to Madison.

Not sexual.

Financial.

Move the consulting invoice through M.C. Strategy. Iris checks vendor names.

I asked:

“What is M.C. Strategy?”

Jason closed the computer.

“Work.”

“Madison’s initials?”

“Coincidence.”

“Open it.”

“No.”

I reached for the laptop.

He grabbed my wrist.

I pulled away.

The stockpot behind him contained water for pasta.

Boiling.

What happened next remained disputed for months even inside my own head.

Jason said I knocked it.

I remembered his hand on the handle.

I remembered saying:

“Put it down.”

Then:

“If you ruin this company, I swear to God—”

Then water.

Across my shoulder.

Chest.

Arms.

I screamed.

Jason stared.

For one second he looked horrified.

Then he said:

May you like

“Why did you grab it?”

That sentence became the official story before I reached the hospital.
