Chapter 3

The night he broke my leg began with a glass of wine.

Not thrown.

Not spilled.

Placed.

Veronica placed it on the table beside my dinner plate as if she were hostess of my home.

My home.

At least, I had believed it was mine.

The San Diego mansion sat above the coastline with marble floors, a sweeping staircase, and windows that caught the sunset like expensive lies.

Grant said the house belonged to his family.

In truth, the mortgage had been saved twice with money from accounts I brought into the marriage.

He called those transfers “shared support.”

His mother called them “wifely investment.”

Veronica called them “proof you wanted in.”

That evening, I came downstairs after hearing laughter from the dining room.

Grant and Veronica were at the table.

Two plates.

Two wineglasses.

One candlelit dinner.

Mine had not been set.

Veronica looked up and smiled.

“Oh.”

“We thought you were sleeping.”

I looked at Grant.

He did not look ashamed.

He looked irritated that I had interrupted.

“I want her out of my house,” I said.

Veronica laughed softly.

Grant set down his fork.

“Careful.”

“No.”

The word surprised all three of us.

I had said no many times in my head.

Rarely out loud.

“No,” I repeated.

“She leaves tonight.”

Grant stood.

Veronica took a sip of wine.

Her eyes shone with entertainment.

Grant walked toward me slowly.

“You are embarrassing yourself.”

“I’m calling my attorney.”

He grabbed my wrist.

I pulled away.

He pushed me back against the stair rail.

The first impact stole my breath.

The second sent pain screaming down my leg.

The world tilted.

I hit the marble floor beneath the staircase.

For a moment, everything went silent except the chandelier humming above me.

Grant stared down.

Not horrified.

Calculating.

Veronica came closer, wineglass still in hand.

She looked at my twisted leg and said, “That looks inconvenient.”

Grant crouched near me.

“You fell.”

I whispered, “No.”

He leaned closer.

“You fell.”

That was when I understood.

He was not frightened by what he had done.
