Chapter 7

At the hospital, Grant tried to enter my room as my husband.

He was stopped before the elevator.

Ruth had already filed emergency instructions.

No private access.

No medical decision authority.

No removal of records.

No communication except through counsel.

Grant shouted in the lobby.

A nurse later told me that he said, “I am her husband,” four times before security replied, “Not in this room.”

That sentence carried me through the first night.

My leg was stabilized.

My bruises documented.

My statement recorded.

The baby question did not exist in our marriage, but the doctor still asked gently if I might be pregnant.

I said no.

Then cried unexpectedly.

Not because I wanted children with Grant.

Because the thought of a child in that house made me realize how much danger I had normalized for myself alone.

Elias sat beside the hospital bed until dawn.

He did not lecture.

That was how I knew he was terrified.

My father lectured when he was annoyed.

When fear found him, he became silent and useful.

At 6:15 a.m., Ruth arrived with a folder.

“Grant is claiming accident.”

“Of course he is.”

“Veronica is claiming she saw you stumble.”

I closed my eyes.

“Of course she is.”

Ruth placed her phone on the table.

“Then let’s discuss what she forgot.”

She played the storage room recording.

Grant’s voice.

She has no one here.

By morning, she will apologize.

Then she leaves with nothing.

Ruth stopped it.

“That alone is not everything.”

“No.”

“But it opens doors.”

Elias finally spoke.

“Open all of them.”

Ruth looked at me.

“Lena decides.”

That mattered.

Everyone looked at me.

Not as a victim to manage.

As the person whose life had been nearly taken apart.

I thought of Grant’s watch.

Veronica’s wineglass.

The lock clicking in the dark.

I thought of every time I had softened the truth because it seemed easier than detonating my marriage.

Then I said, “Open all of them.”

By noon, bank holds began.

By two, Ruth requested surveillance from the mansion.

By four, Elias’s forensic accountants found the first transfer.

Grant had been moving my money for months.
