Chapter 5

Elias Rowan did not bring police first.

That was not his style.

Police follow evidence.

My father brought witnesses who could preserve it before anyone touched the scene.

Three black SUVs reached the mansion in twelve minutes.

The first carried private security.

The second carried a medical trauma specialist.

The third carried Elias.

By the time headlights flooded through the mansion windows, Grant was in the living room with Veronica, pouring himself whiskey.

He had changed his expression.

Not his suit.

Just his face.

The cruel husband had become the worried spouse.

He was very good at that.

Veronica stood near the staircase with her wineglass, pretending boredom.

Then the doorbell rang.

Not once.

Three times.

Sharp.

Controlled.

Grant opened the front door himself.

That was another mistake.

My father stood under the porch light in a charcoal overcoat, silver hair untouched by the night wind, face calm enough to frighten anyone intelligent.

Grant frowned.

“Can I help you?”

Elias looked past him into the foyer.

“Where is my daughter?”

Veronica’s wineglass lowered.

Grant blinked.

“Your daughter?”

Elias stepped inside without being invited.

“My daughter.”

Grant’s face shifted as he looked at the men behind him.

Security.

Medical staff.

A woman in a dark suit carrying a sealed evidence kit.

His confidence did not vanish all at once.

It began leaking.

“I think there has been a misunderstanding.”

Elias looked at Grant’s watch.

Then at the marble floor near the staircase.

Then at the faint mark where I had fallen.

“No.”

His voice was quiet.

“I think there has been a crime.”

Veronica stepped forward.

“Who are you?”

Elias turned his eyes to her.

She stopped moving.

People like Veronica understood status in clothing, cars, and posture.

My father wore no visible logo.

That made him harder for her.

Grant tried again.

“Lena is resting.”

From the storage room, I hit the door with my palm.

Once.

Weakly.

Enough.

Every face turned.

Elias’s calm broke for the first time.

Not into panic.

Into command.

“Open it.”

Grant did not move.

My father looked at the security chief.

May you like

“Now.”
