Chapter 6

They opened the storage room door in less than ten seconds.
I remember the light first.
Too bright.
Then my father’s silhouette filling the doorway.
For the first time since I was a child, I said his name like rescue.
“Dad.”
Elias dropped to one knee beside me.
Not caring about the dust.
Not caring about the blood on the bandage.
Not caring that Grant and Veronica were watching.
His hand hovered above my shoulder.
“Can I touch you?”
That almost broke me.
Grant had grabbed.
Dragged.
Thrown.
My father asked.
I nodded.
He placed his hand gently against my hair.
Then looked at the medical specialist.
“She needs transport.”
Grant stepped into the doorway.
“Wait.”
Nobody listened.
That was the first true punishment.
Men like Grant are built from rooms obeying them.
This room stopped.
The specialist checked my pulse, my pupils, my leg, my breathing.
Ruth’s voice still came faintly from the phone in my hand.
Elias noticed it.
“You called Ruth.”
I nodded.
“She recorded him.”
My father’s face did not change.
But the room did.
Grant understood the sentence.
Veronica did too.
Grant said, “Lena, this has gone far enough.”
I looked at him.
My fear was still there.
But something larger stood beside it now.
“You locked me in a storage room.”
“You were hysterical.”
Ruth’s voice came from the phone.
“Mr. Caldwell, this is Ruth Caldwell.”
“Please continue.”
Grant froze.
Elias stood slowly.
He turned to Grant.
“You harmed my daughter.”
Grant lifted his chin.
“She fell.”
Elias looked toward the staircase.
“Then why did you lock a fallen woman away from medical care?”
Veronica whispered, “Grant.”
He shot her a warning look.
Too late.
Elias saw that too.
My father’s people moved through the foyer without touching anything unnecessary.
Photographs.
Timestamped video.
Preserved door lock.
Documented marble marks.
Recorded witness positions.
Grant watched them with growing horror.
“This is my house,” he snapped.
Elias looked back at him.
“No.”
May you like
“Tonight, it is a scene.”
