Chapter 3

The blue folder had appeared two nights earlier.

It was not supposed to be visible.

Elena found it in Ethan’s study when she went searching for her passport, which had disappeared from the drawer where she always kept it.

The folder sat half-hidden beneath a stack of property insurance papers.

Blue.

Plain.

Thick.

Ethan’s name written on the tab in his neat block letters.

She opened it because marriage had already taught her that privacy and secrecy were different things.

Inside were copies.

Not originals.

Not enough to understand everything.

But enough to frighten her.

Medical authorization forms she had never signed.

Photographs of rooms in their house.

A list of household cameras.

Notes about a trust account she was not supposed to know Ethan had been trying to access.

And one printed email with the subject line blacked out by a marker so heavily it tore the paper.

Elena photographed nothing.

She heard Ethan’s footsteps in the hall and closed the folder quickly.

But he saw her.

He did not shout then.

That was what frightened her.

He only looked at the desk.

Then at her.

Then at the folder.

“What were you doing in here?”

“Looking for my passport.”

His smile was small.

“Why would you need that?”

The next day, Margaret came over without calling.

She watched Elena closely through lunch.

Too closely.

That evening, Ethan cooked.

He had not cooked for her in months.

“Soup,” he said, smiling from the kitchen. “Simple. Warm. Harmless.”

Elena remembered the word harmless when Dr. Carter later asked what happened.

She almost laughed.

But pain took the sound away.
