Chapter 9

Dr. Carter placed the tablet facedown beside Elena’s bed.
That simple motion drew every eye.
Ethan’s face tightened.
“What is on that?”
Dr. Carter removed her glasses slowly, cleaned them with a folded cloth, then put them back on.
“Enough for me to ask one question.”
Margaret’s hand went to her pearls.
Ethan tried to laugh.
It came out thin.
“This is ridiculous. She had an accident. She was cooking. She spilled hot soup. That is all.”
Dr. Carter’s gaze did not move.
“Then explain what the kitchen camera recorded.”
The room went silent.
Elena’s breathing steadied.
Nurse Allison’s hand remained on the bed rail.
The detectives watched through the closed door.
Ethan’s hands dropped.
It was not confession.
Not yet.
It was recognition.
The specific kind that appears when a person realizes the lie they chose no longer fits the evidence other people have seen.
Margaret turned toward him sharply.
“Ethan?”
He did not look at her.
That frightened her more.
The first crack between them opened in that silence.
Had he told her there was no recording?
Had he promised the camera was disabled?
Had he hidden something even from the mother who always defended him?
Elena did not know.
And the story did not need to reveal it yet.
Dr. Carter remained between Ethan and the bed.
“Mr. Mercer,” she said, calm and precise, “I asked you a question.”
Ethan looked at the tablet.
Then at Elena.
May you like
For once, she did not look away.
