Chapter 6

Ethan looked at the detectives first, then the tablet on the counter.
“What is this?” he asked.
Dr. Carter did not answer him.
She looked at Nurse Allison.
“Please retrieve the sealed medical-evidence folder.”
Margaret’s face tightened.
“Medical evidence? Doctor, this is unnecessary.”
Dr. Carter turned toward her.
“Mrs. Mercer’s injuries require documentation.”
Margaret smiled thinly.
“She is my daughter-in-law. I am aware of what happened.”
“No,” Dr. Carter said calmly. “You are aware of what you are saying happened.”
The difference landed hard.
Ethan stepped closer to the bed.
“Elena, tell them.”
Elena’s breathing quickened.
Nurse Allison immediately placed one hand on the bed rail near Elena—not touching her injured skin, simply anchoring the space.
Dr. Carter stepped between Ethan and the bed.
“Do not crowd my patient.”
His jaw tightened.
“My wife.”
“My patient.”
For the first time since they arrived, Ethan had no immediate answer.
The detectives remained outside.
Visible.
Waiting.
Not entering.
Not arresting.
Not turning the room into a spectacle.
Just present enough to tell Elena that Dr. Carter had already moved beyond suspicion.
Margaret looked at Ethan.
Not with concern for Elena.
With fear of what he had failed to control.
“You said there was no camera in the kitchen,” Margaret whispered.
Ethan turned sharply.
That was the wrong reaction.
Dr. Carter noticed.
Elena noticed too.
