Chapter 7

The kitchen camera had been Elena’s idea.

Ethan hated that.

He said cameras made a home feel like a hotel.

Elena said the house staff needed security after a package theft.

He argued for weeks.

Then agreed only after insisting the system connect to an app he controlled.

At least, he believed he controlled it.

Ethan knew about the obvious cameras.

Front door.

Driveway.

Back gate.

Kitchen ceiling corner.

What he did not know was that the installer had added a backup recording route after Elena asked privately whether footage could be preserved if the main account was altered.

The installer was a former patient’s brother.

He told her, “If you ever need the backup, call the service number and ask for the blue folder protocol.”

Elena had almost forgotten that phrase.

Blue folder.

Until she saw Ethan’s file.

Until the kitchen incident.

Until Dr. Carter leaned near her and asked what she needed to know.

Elena did not know exactly what the camera recorded.

She remembered fragments only.

Heat.

Ethan’s hand.

Margaret’s voice.

The sudden shock of pain.

The floor.

Ethan saying, “Soup. Say soup.”

No flashback could make it clearer than the evidence would.

So she did not explain what she could not fully trust her mind to hold.

She pointed the doctor toward the folder.

And the camera.

Dr. Carter had already requested the hospital’s forensic liaison before confronting Ethan.

The tablet beside the bed did not display footage.

It did not need to.

Its presence alone changed the room.

Ethan stared at it like it was alive.
