Chapter 1

Husband Dumps Divorce Papers on His Wife Beside Their Premature Twins—Then Her Billionaire Grandfather Enters the NICU.
Dominic Hale handed me divorce papers while our premature twins were sleeping against my chest.
I was still in a hospital bed, too weak to sit fully upright, an IV taped to my hand, monitors blinking softly beside me, two tiny newborns wrapped in pale-blue blankets beneath my arms.
They were five days old.
Still small enough that every breath felt like a prayer.
Dominic stood at the foot of the bed in a fitted black suit, holding a folder like it was a business contract instead of the end of a family.
Beside him stood Natalie Reed, pregnant, blonde, glowing in a red maternity dress and diamonds.
She looked at my babies like they were obstacles.
Dominic opened the folder and dropped it on the blanket near my knee.
“Sign it. I drained every account.”
Before I could speak, the NICU doors opened.
My grandfather entered.
Charles Brooks.
Seventy-two years old.
White hair.
Charcoal three-piece suit.
The man Dominic had always called “old money with old rules.”
Charles crossed the room in three steps.
Dominic turned too late.
The punch landed once, sharp and controlled, sending Dominic staggering away from my bed.
Dr. Nathan Cole moved instantly between them.
No second strike came.
Natalie shielded her stomach and hissed, “You and those babies are on your own.”
I looked past Dominic, past the folder, directly at my grandfather.
My voice barely worked.
“Grandfather… they tried to leave us with nothing.”
Charles looked at the twins.
Something in his face changed from rage to protection.
Then he turned slowly toward Dominic.
“You abandoned my great-grandchildren in my hospital?”
Dominic’s face emptied.
Natalie looked toward the doctors.
Only then did she understand.
Charles looked toward the NICU entrance and spoke without raising his voice.
“Lock this floor. Nobody leaves.”
The secured doors closed behind him.
Dominic stared in horror.

And for the first time since the twins were born, I felt my babies breathe against me and knew we were not alone.
