Chapter 6

When Charles ordered the floor locked, no one questioned him.
That was how Dominic finally understood.
Not fully.
Not the structures.
Not the trusts.
Not the network.
But enough to know the room had shifted beyond marriage.
“Lock this floor. Nobody leaves.”
The secured doors closed softly in the background.
Two hospital security officers appeared beyond the glass but did not enter.
Not yet.
Everything remained controlled.
Professional.
Documented.
Dominic hated that more than chaos.
Chaos would let him claim hysteria.
Control made the record clean.
Dr. Cole asked one nurse to check the twins.
Another to remain with me.
A third administrator entered and stood near the door with a tablet.
Natalie whispered, “Dominic, what is happening?”
He did not answer.
He was staring at Charles like a man seeing the foundation beneath a building he thought he owned.
Charles pointed to the divorce folder on the floor.
“Who prepared this?”
Dominic said nothing.
The administrator took a photo of the folder where it lay before touching it.
Evidence.
That word seemed to move silently through the room.
Dominic looked toward me.
“Audrey, tell them this is unnecessary.”
For years, I might have.
To calm the room.
To protect his image.
To avoid making things worse.
That day, I was too tired to lie.
“He said he drained every account.”
The administrator looked up.
Dr. Cole glanced at Charles.
Natalie’s eyes widened.
Not at the cruelty.
At the exposure.
Dominic said sharply, “That is not what I meant.”
Charles looked at him.
“In front of witnesses, you said it clearly enough.”
My grandfather did not raise his voice.
He did not need to.
I remembered being six years old, sitting beside him after my parents’ funeral, asking what would happen to me.
He had said, “You will never have to negotiate your safety.”
I had forgotten that promise.
May you like
He had not.
