Chapter 9

Charles asked everyone unnecessary to leave Audrey’s direct bedside area.

Not the floor.

The bedside.

The distinction mattered.

Dominic and Natalie were moved several feet back by staff positioning, not force.

Security stayed beyond the glass.

Dr. Cole remained close.

The twins were checked again.

Leo’s breathing stayed steady.

Grace’s oxygen level stayed stable.

I held onto those facts like scripture.

Charles approached only after Dr. Cole nodded.

“May I?” he asked.

My grandfather, who owned towers with his name on them, asked permission to touch my shoulder.

I nodded.

His hand rested lightly against my hair.

For one second, I was not a wife being discarded or a mother fighting from a hospital bed.

I was Audrey Brooks, five years old, grieving and safe beside the only man who had never treated my tears like inconvenience.

“I’m sorry,” he said.

“Don’t.”

“Yes.”

His voice softened.

“I let you believe distance was the same as independence.”

I shook my head.

“You warned me.”

“Warnings are not protection if the person you love is too ashamed to use them.”

That broke me.

I cried silently, careful not to shake the babies.

Charles stayed still.

No demands.

No questions.

Just presence.

Across the room, Dominic watched.

His face looked almost confused.

He had never understood protection without ownership.

Natalie whispered something to him.

He did not answer.

Another call came through his phone.

This time he declined it.

Immediately, another alert arrived.

Charles looked toward the administrator.

“Has the floor log been preserved?”

“Yes, Mr. Brooks.”

“Video?”

“Secured.”

“Staff statements?”

“In progress.”

Dominic’s head lifted.

“You’re treating me like a criminal.”

Charles turned.

“No, Dominic.”

His voice was cold now.

“I am treating you like a man whose actions require documentation.”

Dominic swallowed.

May you like

That difference terrified him.
