Chapter 4

I had not called my grandfather that morning.

That was the part Dominic never understood.

Charles Brooks did not arrive because I begged.

He arrived because he had been watching.

Not spying.

Protecting.

There is a difference.

Years earlier, after my parents died, Grandfather built a network around me that looked invisible unless someone tried to break it.

Independent attorneys.

Medical advocates.

Asset protections.

Hospital reporting safeguards.

A rule that any major legal action involving me inside a Brooks-affiliated medical facility triggered immediate review.

Dominic used to mock it.

“Your grandfather thinks the world is still run by sealed envelopes and men in suits.”

He was wrong.

It was also run by compliance alerts, hospital counsel, trust officers, and nurses who noticed when a postpartum mother cried silently over documents she had not requested.

When Dominic walked into the NICU and placed the divorce folder on my blanket, the first nurse entered a concern note.

When Natalie identified herself as Dominic’s “partner” in front of medical staff, the second note went in.

When Dominic told Dr. Cole he would be “assuming decisions” because I was not competent, the internal alert triggered.

By the time Dominic told me he drained every account, my grandfather had already received a call.

Charles entered the room without asking Dominic’s permission.

He never looked at Natalie first.

Never at the folder.

Never at the security cameras.

He looked at me.

Then the twins.

Then Dominic.

The punch was not wild.

That almost frightened Dominic more.

It was controlled.

One strike.

One message.

Then Charles stopped himself because the babies were near, and because real power does not need repetition.

Dr. Cole stepped between them immediately.

“Mr. Brooks.”

Charles nodded once.

“Doctor.”

That was when Dominic understood the doctor knew him.

Not socially.

Institutionally.

Natalie looked around the room.

At the staff.

At the monitors.

At the glass doors.

At the way everyone responded when Charles spoke.

Her confidence faltered.

She had thought she was walking into a private humiliation.

Instead, she had walked into a protected facility owned by the family she had helped betray.
