Chapter 10

I did not go back to the apartment before the defense.

That was the part Hunter had not expected.

He thought humiliation would send me home.

He thought I would hide.

Fix myself.

Apologize for causing trouble.

Ask him what to do next.

Instead, I stood outside the university building at 9:47 a.m. with my dissertation folder against my chest, my laptop bag on my shoulder, my father beside me, and my uneven hair moving in the cold Chicago wind.

Students passed.

A few glanced.

One looked longer, then quickly away.

I let them.

My father’s phone buzzed.

He looked at it once.

His expression did not change.

“Hunter?” I asked.

“Yes.”

“What did he say?”

“He asked where you are.”

I almost smiled.

The first question of a man losing control.

Where are you?

My father typed one message.

Slowly.

Then turned the screen away before sending.

I did not ask what it said.

I did not need to.

Some boundaries are private even when they protect you.

Back at the apartment, Hunter and Barbara would still be standing in the kitchen with the severed hair on the floor, the scissors on the counter, and the dissertation pages scattered across the table.

Maybe Hunter’s phone buzzed then.

Maybe Barbara demanded to know what Thomas wrote.

Maybe Hunter read the message once and understood that the man he dismissed as a polite academic had just entered the room from miles away.

Not physically.

Not publicly.

Not with shouting.

With knowledge.

With witnesses.

With documentation.

With one daughter who was no longer alone.

My father looked at the university doors.

“Ready?”

“No.”

He nodded.

“Good answer.”

I laughed softly.

Then I breathed in.

Once.

Twice.

My hair was uneven.

My hands shook.

My marriage was collapsing behind me.

But my dissertation was in my arms.

My name was on the title page.

And the room ahead was mine because I had earned it before anyone tried to take it.

I stepped toward the doors.

Behind me, my father’s phone buzzed again and again.

He ignored it.

So did I.

The final consequence could wait.

The defense could begin.
