Chapter 7

Hunter tried one last sentence before I left.
“Selena, think carefully.”
I turned in the doorway.
He had used that tone before.
Before I declined a dinner with his firm’s partners because of a research deadline.
Before I refused to let Barbara edit my acknowledgments page.
Before I told him I would keep Bennett as my professional name.
Think carefully.
It meant choose obedience before consequences arrive.
This time, I was the consequence.
“I have,” I said.
Barbara pointed at the hair on the floor.
“You’ll walk into a doctoral defense looking like that?”
I touched the uneven ends.
My throat tightened, but my voice stayed steady.
“Yes.”
Hunter gave a short, disbelieving laugh.
“You’ll humiliate yourself.”
“No.”
I looked at the dissertation folder.
“Someone already tried.”
The hallway was empty.
The elevator at the end glowed blue.
My laptop bag slid against my shoulder.
My phone remained pressed to my ear.
My father stayed silent, letting me leave without turning the moment into another instruction.
That mattered.
Control speaks constantly.
Protection knows when to let you move.
I stepped into the hallway.
Hunter said, “Don’t come back expecting sympathy.”
I looked over my shoulder.
“I’m not coming back expecting anything from you.”
That finally struck him.
Not the hair.
Not the phone call.
Not the defense.
The possibility that expectation itself was ending.
I walked to the elevator.
The apartment door remained open behind me.
In the polished reflection of the elevator doors, I saw myself.
Blonde hair uneven.
Face pale.
Eyes red.
Dissertation folder clutched to my chest.
For a second, grief rose so hard I almost bent under it.
Then my father’s voice came through the phone.
“Still with me?”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
The elevator opened.
I stepped inside.
Only when the doors began closing did I see Hunter pick up his own phone.
Barbara whispered something sharp behind him.
His hand shook.
Maybe he was calling someone.
May you like
Maybe he was realizing everyone he could call would ask why his wife’s hair was on the kitchen floor the night before her defense.
