Chapter 6

My father answered on the first ring.
That was who Thomas Bennett had always been.
The parent who picked up.
Even during meetings.
Even during flights.
Even when I said everything was fine in a voice that made him know it was not.
I had not called him during most of my marriage.
Not honestly.
I sent updates.
Holiday photos.
Academic news.
Safe versions of my life.
The daughter who did not want her father to worry became the wife who hid too much.
But that night, walking toward the apartment door with my chopped hair brushing unevenly against my neck, I called him.
“Selena?”
I tried to speak.
Could not.
Behind me, Hunter said, “Do not drag your father into this.”
Barbara added, “Oh, of course. Run to Daddy.”
My father heard that.
His voice changed.
“What happened?”
I looked down at the dissertation folder in my arms.
Then at the severed hair on the kitchen floor.
“Barbara cut my hair.”
Silence.
Not empty.
Dangerous.
Hunter’s face shifted.
He had met my father only as a polite man in tailored jackets who asked careful questions and remembered birthdays.
He had never heard Thomas Bennett silent.
My father said, “Are you hurt?”
“My hair.”
“Anything else?”
I closed my eyes.
Not tonight, I almost said.
Instead, I told the truth.
“Not physically.”
“Can you leave?”
Hunter stepped closer.
“She’s not going anywhere until she calms down.”
My father heard that too.
“Selena,” he said, calm now. Too calm. “Walk into that room, sweetheart. I’ll be there.”
Hunter’s face tightened.
“What room?”
My father answered him.
“The room she earned.”
Barbara’s eyes widened.
Hunter looked between my phone and my face, finally understanding that this call had not made me weaker.
It had created a witness.
I opened the apartment door.
Cold hallway air moved across my face.
My father said, “Do not stop anywhere alone. Go to the hotel near campus. Send me your location. I am calling Dr. Whitman after we hang up.”
My committee chair.
My father knew her.
Of course he did.
May you like
Hunter knew it now too.
