Chapter 4

The first cut was the worst because I still could not believe it was happening.
Barbara gripped my hair near the back of my head and pulled hard enough to make my eyes water.
“Maybe if you looked less like you were trying to impress men in suits, you’d remember you are a wife.”
Hunter stood three feet away.
Three feet.
Close enough to stop her.
Close enough to take the scissors.
Close enough to say, Mom, don’t.
He did nothing.
The blades closed.
A heavy lock of hair slid down my shoulder and fell to the floor.
I heard it before I understood it.
That soft, awful sound.
Something that had been part of me landing like trash.
I gasped.
Barbara smiled.
“There. More appropriate already.”
My hand flew to the uneven side of my hair.
“Hunter.”
He sighed.
Like I was embarrassing him.
Like the problem was my reaction, not his mother holding scissors.
“You’ve been hysterical all week.”
“She cut my hair.”
“You pushed her.”
I stared at him.
“I did not.”
Barbara lifted the scissors again.
“You walked into this house acting superior.”
“It’s my house too.”
Hunter’s expression sharpened.
That was another forbidden sentence.
Like most controlling men, he loved shared property until I used the word mine.
Barbara stepped behind me again.
I backed away and hit the kitchen island.
She grabbed another section of hair.
Hunter checked his watch.
Checked his watch.
That was the moment I understood he had not merely failed to stop her.
He had allowed time for it.
Maybe planned it.
Maybe not the exact scissors, not the exact cut, but the breaking.
The humiliation.
The chaos before my defense.
The second lock fell.
My eyes blurred.
Barbara leaned close to my ear.
“Women don’t belong in rooms like yours.”
Hunter laughed.
And something about the laugh did what the scissors could not.
May you like
It separated me from the part of myself still waiting for him to become the man I married.
