Chapter 5

Jack did not run toward me.

That would have been too honest.

Instead, he stood below the walkway frozen between two lives.

Lauren touched his arm.

He shook her off without looking.

That hurt her.

Good.

Not because I hated her most.

I did not.

Jack had made vows to me.

Lauren had made choices around those vows.

Both mattered, but not equally.

Carol looked up and saw me.

Her face did something I would remember for years.

Not shame.

Anger.

As if my presence had ruined a family photograph.

Ashley checked her phone again and whispered something to Carol.

The children stood near the suitcases, confused by adults suddenly forgetting how to pretend.

I hated Jack for bringing children into a lie.

Even borrowed children.

Even children who did not understand.

He had wanted the trip to look innocent in photos.

A family vacation.

A mother.

A sister.

A beautiful woman.

Children.

A wholesome scene with me erased from the frame.

My phone buzzed.

Gerald again.

“Do you see him?”

“Yes.”

“Is he aware?”

“He is now.”

“Good. Listen carefully. Do not go down there unless airport security or counsel is present.”

“I’m not afraid of him.”

“I know.”

“Then why?”

“Because men who rely on charm become unpredictable when witnesses turn useful.”

Below, Jack began moving.

Not toward the gate.

Toward the escalator.

Toward me.

Lauren called after him.

“Jack, what’s happening?”

He ignored her.

Carol grabbed his sleeve.

He pulled free.

Ashley looked around, embarrassed now that other travelers were noticing.

The departure gate announcement played softly overhead.

Final boarding soon.

How fitting.

Jack had always loved thresholds.

Rooms where he could step through and leave someone else explaining the damage.

This time, the gate was closing while the file was opening.

I did not move.

My tears had dried on my face.

Gerald stayed on the line.

“Megan?”

“I’m here.”

“Stand where cameras can see you.”

I looked up.

Airport security cameras lined the ceiling.

My father had taught me that too.

Pain privately.

Evidence publicly.

Jack reached the top of the escalator thirty seconds later.

His face was pale, but his voice came out smooth.

“Megan. We need to talk.”

I looked at him.

May you like

“No.”
