Chapter 7
Carol reached us before Lauren did.
That surprised me.
My mother-in-law was sixty-four, but fear made her fast.
She came up the escalator in her white suit, phone clutched in one hand, lipstick still perfect, expression not even close.
“Megan,” she said. “This is not the place.”
I looked at her.
“You took pictures.”
Her eyes flickered.
“What?”
“You were photographing him with her while he was lying to me.”
Carol stiffened.
“It was not like that.”
“What was it like?”
She glanced at Jack.
He looked away.
That told me she had expected him to control me before she had to explain herself.
Ashley arrived next, dragging a beige suitcase behind her.
“Megan, we should all calm down.”
I almost laughed.
Everyone who had boarded the lie now wanted calm.
Lauren stayed near the escalator, eyes moving between Jack and his vibrating phone.
She was learning in real time that being chosen by a liar does not mean being told the truth.
Carol lowered her voice.
“Marriage is complicated.”
“Yes.”
“Men make mistakes.”
“Lies are choices.”
“Your father never understood our family.”
My heart went cold.
Jack looked at her sharply.
“Mom.”
Too late.
Gerald heard it.
So did I.
“What did my father understand?” I asked.
Carol’s mouth closed.
Ashley shifted uncomfortably.
Jack stepped toward his mother.
“Stop talking.”
That was when I knew the sealed file had roots deeper than the affair.
My father had not simply suspected infidelity.
He had found something.
Something involving Jack.
Maybe Carol.
Maybe assets.
Maybe hospital influence.
Maybe all of it.
Gerald spoke through the phone.
“Megan, ask no further questions there.”
I obeyed.
That scared Jack more than if I had shouted.
Because obedience to Gerald meant discipline.
It meant I had stopped trying to win answers emotionally.
I would get them procedurally.
Lauren finally came closer.
“Jack, what documents?”
He did not look at her.
She laughed once, shaking.
“Oh my God. You didn’t tell me something either.”
Carol whispered, “Lauren, not now.”
Lauren stared at her.
“You knew too?”
No one answered.
The airport announcement called final boarding.
