Lauren left first.
Not dramatically.
Quietly.
That was the cruelest thing she could have done to Jack.
He expected tears.
A fight.
A demand.

I inhaled sharply.
Jack did not answer.

“No.”
His face hardened.

Carol stepped in.
“Do not speak to him like that.”
I turned to her.
“You helped him humiliate me.”
Carol lifted her chin.
“I protected my son.”
“No.”
“You protected his access.”

Jack’s phone buzzed again.
He read the notification.
