Chapter 8

The first visible consequence came from the hospital.
Jack’s phone rang with a number he could not ignore.
He stared at the screen.
Then at me.
Then answered.
“Dr. Walker.”
He listened.
His face changed.
Not guilt.
Fear dressed as professionalism.
“I’m at the airport because—”
He stopped.
The person on the other end spoke long enough that even Carol stopped breathing loudly.
“No, I did not claim an active emergency case to—”
Another pause.
Jack closed his eyes.
“I understand.”
He hung up.
Lauren whispered, “What happened?”
He put the phone down slowly.
“Megan,” he said, “call Gerald back and tell him to pause.”
“No.”
“You don’t know what they received.”
“Neither do you.”
That was true.
My father had designed the file so even I would not know the full contents until I needed them.
Protection without burden.
Jack looked almost sick.
Ashley checked her own phone again.
“My card declined.”
Carol snapped, “Not now.”
Ashley’s voice rose.
“The hotel hold reversed. Jack, what is going on?”
Lauren looked at him.
“You paid for the trip through something tied to her family?”
Jack’s silence answered.
The children looked frightened now.
That bothered me.
I looked at Ashley.
“Take them away from this conversation.”
For once, she obeyed.
She guided them toward a row of seats near the window.
Carol watched them go, then turned back to me.
“You are punishing children now?”
“No.”
“I’m noticing them.”
That shut her mouth.
Jack stepped closer again.
Airport security also moved closer.
He noticed and stopped.
“Megan, this can still be contained.”
I stared at him.
“You said emergency surgery.”
His face tightened.
“You keep repeating that like—”
“Like it matters?”
“Yes, Jack. It matters.”
“You used a hospital emergency as a marital alibi.”
“You used your title as a shield.”
“You used the one place people trust you most to make me doubt what I saw.”
His mouth opened.
No answer came.
Gerald’s voice returned through my phone.
“The third set will not release unless he attempts contact after this.”
Jack heard.
So did Carol.
So did Lauren.
The gate door began closing below.
