Chapter 24 - The house no longer needs witnesses

I removed one interior security camera.

Not all.

Just the one in the main living space.

Julian had never destroyed it.

It had always bothered me after the divorce.

I realized I was keeping it because I wanted proof if someone ever entered again.

My security consultant asked:

“Concerned about threat?”

“No.”

“Then why remove?”

“I want rooms that are allowed to be private.”

Exterior security remained.

Normal.

Then the dining room.

The same room Evelyn wanted me to cook for twelve guests while injured.

I hosted a dinner.

Six people.

Amelia.

Jonathan and his wife.

Margaret Sloan.

Two ER colleagues.

Catered.

Paid personally.

No Apex expense.

I did not cook.

At one point Jonathan raised his glass.

“To compliance.”

Everyone groaned.

Good.

Then he said:

“You know the funniest part?”

“No.”

“Julian’s original dinner invoice created one of the cleanest audit leads.”

Not funny.

Still.

The $28,000 Vale invoice had been reduced after settlement to actual allowable costs and refunded unsupported amount.

Closed.

No one needed to mention it again.

Then Julian’s new employer requested a character reference from Mark Ellison.

Not me.

Mark gave one.

Julian got promoted modestly after a year? We should keep tight timeline months maybe now ~1 year. Fine.

He was working.

No procurement signature authority yet.

That was not my business.

Then Evelyn sent Amelia a photograph of herself at a conference.

Vale booth.

Smaller.

Legitimate clients.

She had rebuilt.

Amelia asked:

“Does that bother you?”

“No.”

It did a little.

But I meant the larger answer.

Consequences are not supposed to freeze people forever.

Then the house title.

Final divorce deed/waiver documents recorded.

Julian’s occupancy claims ended.

No lien from his settlement.

No creditor claim.

Residence trust remained mine.

Good.

Then I changed my estate plan.

Did I cut Julian out?

He was already not beneficiary except minor personal bequests under old will.

Removed.

Expected after divorce.

Did I punish Evelyn?

She had never been beneficiary.

No issue.

Updated healthcare proxy:

Amelia.

Financial agent:

Professional fiduciary.

No spouse.

No drama.

Then I found our wedding album.

I did not burn it.

Put it in a box.

Seven years were real.

Not all bad.

That was allowed.

Then a courier delivered one last document:

Apex audit closure certification.

No further findings.

I signed as chair after independent committee approval.

The corporate part was officially over.

But Chapter 25 began with something no audit could resolve.

Evelyn was hospitalized.

And Amelia asked whether I wanted to know.
