Chapter 14 - THE ROUTE THROUGH THE CANYON
Federal marshals moved Richard before dawn.
They used an armored transport vehicle, two escort cars, and a route never entered into the courthouse system. The destination remained confidential until departure.
Amelia stayed at St. Catherine’s with Owen.
Marcus promised to call after Richard reached court.
At 6:18 a.m., the transport passed through a narrow canyon east of the coast.
A maintenance truck entered the road ahead and stopped sideways.
The lead escort braked.
Before marshals could reverse, smoke canisters rolled from the hillside.
The canyon filled with white haze.
Three masked figures approached the transport.
They did not reach Richard.
The rear escort forced one vehicle into the barrier while marshals returned fire. The attackers fled into the hills, leaving the maintenance truck behind.
No officer was seriously injured.
Richard remained secured.
Or so the first report stated.
When the transport reached the courthouse, marshals opened the compartment.
Richard sat handcuffed to the bench.
The restraints appeared intact.
Then an officer noticed that the chain had been cut and reconnected with a removable link.
Richard could have escaped during the smoke.
He chose not to.
Marcus questioned him immediately.
“Who attacked the convoy?”
Richard smiled.
“You spent weeks telling everyone I had no friends.”
“Why were your restraints altered?”
“I don’t know.”
“You could have left.”
“And become a fugitive before trial?”
“You planned to leave the country after killing your wife.”
“That plan did not involve running through a canyon in handcuffs.”
Richard’s calm disturbed Marcus more than escape would have.
The attackers may not have come to free him.
They may have delivered something.
A search found no weapon, phone, or key.
Then officers examined Richard’s shoes.
A thin electronic strip had been pressed beneath one heel.
The device transmitted a copied Beacon certificate.
Richard had regained access to the estate system without carrying a visible wristband.
Marcus placed it inside an evidence container.
The signal had already transmitted once.
At 6:24 a.m., during the smoke attack, it sent an encrypted command toward the Whitmore coastal property.
Estate security blocked the command because Amelia had revoked every certificate.
But the attempt revealed Richard’s objective.
He wanted the vault.
The attackers were likely hired before the helicopter flight as a final contingency. Their identities remained unknown, but Richard’s payment records showed a large cash withdrawal one week before the murder attempt.
The central conspiracy still belonged to Richard and Ben.
The canyon team appeared to be paid contractors who knew only a route and delivery task.
Marcus ordered Richard moved into higher-security detention.
The trial remained scheduled.
Amelia received the update while feeding Owen.
“He stayed in the van because he wanted everyone to believe the attack failed,” she said.
Marcus agreed.
“The real purpose was placing the device.”
“What command did it send?”
“We are decrypting it.”
The result arrived an hour later.
OPEN VAULT
TRANSFER ARCHIVE
ERASE HEIR RECORD
Richard still believed the Beacon archive could be destroyed.
He did not understand that once the vault opened for Amelia, every file copied automatically to federal servers.
His command could not erase anything.
But the phrase HEIR RECORD referred to more than evidence.
The vault contained Owen’s security identity, trust status, and protected access credentials.
Richard wanted to remove his son from the Whitmore system.
“If the record disappeared, what would happen?” Amelia asked.
Grace answered.
“Nothing legally. We have certified copies. But during an emergency, the estate might not recognize Owen as protected.”
Richard had attempted to create one last opening.
Estate engineers rebuilt the system from offline backups and assigned Owen a new encrypted identity.
Amelia ordered the old network physically removed.
No spouse, executive, or contractor would ever receive automatic family access again.
Later that day, Marcus called with another discovery.
The electronic strip from Richard’s shoe contained a location history.
It had been activated once before the canyon attack.
At the Whitmore coastal estate.
The timestamp came from the previous night.
Security cameras showed no intruder.
But the estate’s service tunnel, built beneath the cliff for emergency evacuation, had opened for forty-six seconds.
The tunnel exited below the nursery.
Someone had already entered before delivering the strip to Richard.
The vault remained sealed after Amelia’s visit.
Nothing appeared missing.
Grace checked the evidence archive.
Every file was intact.
Then Amelia’s wristband displayed an unfamiliar message:
SECONDARY HEIR DEVICE DETECTED
The signal came from somewhere inside the estate.
Owen had no second device.
Richard’s band was in federal evidence.
Ben’s copy had been destroyed.
Marcus ordered the house evacuated and searched.
In the nursery, investigators removed the rocking chair.
Beneath one wooden runner, they found a Beacon strip identical to the device hidden in Richard’s shoe.
It had been transmitting Owen’s location since before the helicopter flight.
Richard had placed it there while rehearsing the psychiatric videos.
