Chapter 8 - THE SECOND WRISTBAND

The second Beacon band had been issued to Richard after the wedding.

Amelia’s father designed the system to allow spouses to request emergency access during accidents. Richard’s band could not activate aircraft control, but it could open the Whitmore estate, access the private hangar, and locate Amelia’s primary transponder.

Amelia revoked it during the audit.

The system confirmed the revocation.

Yet Ben’s device still displayed an active security certificate.

Someone had copied Richard’s credentials before the cancellation.

Marcus ordered the band sealed inside an electromagnetic evidence container.

“What was Richard planning to do with it?” Amelia asked.

“Ben says he doesn’t know.”

“Ben has said that about every part he eventually admits.”

Grace reviewed the band’s usage history.

It had opened Amelia’s estate safe.

It had accessed the hangar.

It had also entered the private nursery Amelia prepared for Owen.

The last visit occurred the night before the helicopter flight.

Richard spent nineteen minutes inside.

Amelia had not allowed anyone into the room after finishing it.

She wanted one space untouched by arguments.

Security officers searched the nursery.

Nothing appeared missing.

Then a technician opened the underside of the crib.

A small camera had been installed facing the rocking chair.

Richard intended to record Amelia after Owen’s birth.

“He wanted emotional footage,” Grace said.

“For the psychiatric case.”

“Most likely.”

The camera’s memory contained several test clips.

Richard sat in the rocking chair rehearsing statements.

Amelia is overwhelmed.

She refuses to hold the baby.

She says she wants to disappear.

He adjusted his voice between attempts until he sounded exhausted rather than angry.

The grieving husband had been rehearsed as carefully as the fall.

Another test clip showed Ben standing near the doorway.

“You’re sure the will gives you control?” he asked.

Richard answered, “I only need the court to believe it for one day.”

That sentence revealed the true plan.

Richard did not need the forged codicil to survive permanent examination.

He needed it to create twenty-four hours of confusion.

During those hours, he would move money, cancel the audit, destroy evidence, and take Owen.

By the time the documents were challenged, he intended to be outside the country.

The offshore transfer destination belonged to a holding company registered in the Cayman Islands.

Its owners were Richard and Ben.

Ben’s promised share was not twelve million.

The company agreement divided all recovered funds equally.

“He planned to share my father’s company with the pilot who dropped me over the ocean,” Amelia said.

Grace corrected gently.

“They planned to steal what they could liquidate. They could never lawfully own the company.”

Amelia understood.

The distinction mattered legally.

Emotionally, Richard had already treated her life as a transferable asset.

Ben agreed to show investigators where the original financial agreements were hidden.

They were stored inside a maintenance compartment in the private hangar.

Marcus’s team recovered contracts, offshore instructions, and a handwritten checklist.

Disable door alarm.

Remove Amelia’s phone after fall.

Confirm no visible rescue craft.

Return under turbulence explanation.

File codicil.

Activate medical proxy.

Move child if viable.

The final line had been underlined:

Do not allow Grace Lawson access to Amelia.

Grace read it without expression.

“He knew you would stop him,” Amelia said.

“He knew I would read the whole document.”

Richard’s plan depended on everyone reading only the page placed in front of them.

The pilot read payment terms.

The board read an appointment email.

The hospital read a medical proxy.

The public read a grieving statement.

Grace read everything.

Owen’s condition continued improving. He opened his eyes for longer periods and no longer needed the strongest breathing support.

Amelia held him for the first time with nurses supporting her injured arm.

His body rested against her chest, impossibly small and warm.

She whispered that he had survived the sky and the sea.

A nurse entered carrying a hospital transfer request.

The document ordered Owen moved to the private clinic named in Richard’s forged medical directive.

It had been submitted electronically six minutes earlier.

Richard and Ben were both in custody.

The hardware key and wristband were sealed.

Yet the request carried Amelia’s verified digital signature.

👉 One of Richard’s scheduled contingencies was still operating, and this time it was trying to take Owen directly from the hospital.
