Chapter 15 - THE DAY THEY WERE SUPPOSED TO GO HOME

Owen was discharged from St. Catherine’s six weeks after the helicopter flight.

He remained small, but he breathed without assistance and gained weight steadily. Dr. Ward reviewed every instruction with Amelia and Grace.

No electronic transfer.

No unverified medication.

No destination entered into public records.

The Whitmore estate remained closed while federal technicians removed Richard’s hidden devices.

Amelia chose a protected coastal cottage owned by the independent trust.

It was smaller than the mansion and had no private hangar.

She liked that.

The rooms felt built for living rather than controlling.

Before leaving the hospital, Amelia dressed Owen in a soft blue sleeper and wrapped him inside a white blanket.

Her injured shoulder had begun healing, though she still carried him with both arms supported.

She looked down at his face.

“We’re going somewhere quiet.”

Grace waited beside the door.

Marcus had assigned Coast Guard protection for the drive.

Richard was being transported to court at the same time for a formal arraignment on the expanded charges. His route had been changed again.

Every vehicle had been inspected.

Every restraint had been replaced.

At 9:07 a.m., Amelia’s convoy left the hospital garage.

At 9:12, Marcus called.

“Richard’s transport has stopped responding.”

Amelia’s body tightened.

“What happened?”

“The tracking signal disappeared inside the northern tunnel.”

“Was there an attack?”

“We don’t know.”

The convoy carrying Amelia changed direction immediately.

Instead of the coastal cottage, they headed toward a secure federal facility.

Grace reached for the encrypted tablet.

Richard’s transport signal returned for three seconds.

It showed the vehicle stopped beside an emergency exit inside the tunnel.

Then the signal separated.

The transport remained in place.

A second beacon moved west.

Toward the coast.

Marcus’s voice sharpened through the speaker.

“Richard is no longer inside the vehicle.”

Marshals entered the rear compartment and found one officer unconscious. The exterior locks remained closed. A maintenance hatch beneath the bench had been cut hours earlier and concealed beneath a steel plate.

Richard had known the route would pass through the tunnel.

The canyon attack had not only delivered a Beacon strip.

It had provided him with a cutting tool hidden inside the vehicle frame.

He waited for the next transport, opened the floor hatch, and escaped through the tunnel service channel.

Amelia looked down at Owen.

“Where is he going?”

Grace opened the Beacon security map.

A signal had appeared at the Whitmore estate.

Not from Richard’s revoked wristband.

From the strip beneath the nursery chair.

The program had activated when Owen’s hospital discharge entered the medical system.

Richard knew Amelia was expected to return home that morning.

The estate cameras turned on one by one.

The front hall was empty.

The private hangar remained sealed.

Then the nursery feed appeared.

The crib had been removed during the search, leaving the room bare except for the rocking chair and pale curtains moving beside an open window.

A figure stepped into view.

Richard.

He wore detention clothing beneath a stolen maintenance jacket. Dirt covered his hands. A fresh cut crossed his forehead.

He looked directly into the camera.

Amelia’s phone rang.

The call came through the estate’s internal system.

Grace told her not to answer.

Amelia pressed the speaker icon.

Richard’s breathing filled the vehicle.

“You took him somewhere else.”

“You will never touch Owen.”

“You think this was about touching him?”

“You tried to erase his record.”

“I tried to stop your father’s program from deciding who our son belongs to.”

“He belongs to himself.”

Richard laughed quietly.

“You sound like Conrad.”

“Where are you going?”

“The vault did not contain the original will.”

Grace became still.

The certified will had been stored with the trust bank for years.

Richard continued.

“Your father left another document. Ben found the vault entrance, but he never found the lower room.”

“There is no lower room.”

“That is what the system told you.”

Behind Richard, the nursery floor opened.

Not the lift Amelia had used.

A second section of wood withdrew near the ocean-facing wall, revealing stone steps descending beneath the house.

Richard looked toward them.

“The program began when you activated the wristband,” he said. “It doesn’t end with my trial.”

Marcus’s voice entered Amelia’s secure earpiece.

“Teams are three minutes from the estate. Keep him talking.”

Amelia looked at Owen’s sleeping face.

“What do you think is down there?”

“The reason your father never trusted me.”

“He was right not to.”

“No. He knew who I was before you met me.”

Amelia stopped breathing.

Richard descended the first step.

The camera struggled to follow him into the darkness.

A red light appeared below.

Then another.

The Beacon system displayed a warning on Grace’s tablet:

UNREGISTERED HEIR CHAMBER OPEN

Owen began crying.

Inside the estate, Richard turned toward a sound beyond the camera.

Someone else was moving below the nursery.

He froze.

A man’s voice rose from the darkness.

“You were never authorized to enter.”

Richard’s face lost all color.

Amelia recognized the voice.

It belonged to her father.

Conrad Whitmore had been dead for six years.

The nursery camera cut to black.
