Chapter 1

Husband Slaps His Wife for Taking Their Feverish Daughter to the Hospital Until One Phone Call Brings a Terrifying Surprise to His Door.
Megan’s cheek still burned where Brian had slapped her.
She sat frozen in the driver’s seat, one hand on the steering wheel, the other shaking near the lock button. Behind her, five-year-old Lily shivered in the rear booster seat, pink pajamas damp with sweat, cheeks flushed bright red from fever.
The front door of the suburban Columbus home stood wide open.
Brian stormed down the steps, face twisted with anger.
Behind him, Donna stood in the doorway wearing her burgundy dress, arms raised as if Megan were the one destroying the family.
Chloe, Brian’s sixteen-year-old niece, stood near the porch with her smartphone held upright, still recording.
Brian reached the bottom step and pointed toward the car.
“Megan, unlock this car right now!”
Megan’s fingers slammed the lock button.
The doors clicked shut.
Lily coughed weakly in the back seat.
That sound cut through Megan’s fear.
She started the engine.
Brian’s eyes widened.
Inside the car, Megan lifted her phone to her ear and forced herself to speak even though her breath kept breaking.
“He hit me. Lily has a hundred-and-four fever.”
Outside, Donna rushed onto the porch and pointed at Chloe’s phone.
“Delete that video before you destroy this family!”
Chloe backed away, tears rising, but she did not lower the phone.
Brian reached the driver’s window and struck the glass once with his open palm.
“Tell whoever that is this is a private family matter.”
Megan looked at him through the closed window.
For the first time that afternoon, she did not apologize.
A calm male voice came through her phone.
“Stay in the car. I’m almost there.”
Bright headlights turned onto the street behind Brian.
Several dark vehicles approached the house.
