Chapter 3

Chloe had not meant to become a witness.
She had come over after school because Donna told her there would be dinner, and because Uncle Brian’s house always felt warmer than her own apartment.
At sixteen, Chloe had learned to disappear inside adult arguments.
Stay quiet.
Stand near doorways.
Pretend to check her phone.
But when Brian hit Megan, something inside Chloe refused to disappear.
Her thumb found the record button.
She did not even fully understand why.
Maybe because Megan’s face changed after the slap.
Maybe because Lily made a small, broken sound.
Maybe because Donna said, “Now look what you made him do,” and Chloe felt sick.
The camera caught the foyer from the staircase.
Brian blocking the door.
Megan holding Lily.
Donna stepping around them with a folded coat as if the problem was appearance, not fever.
Brian’s hand rising.
The slap.
Megan’s head turning.
Lily crying.
Then Megan’s silence.
That silence scared Chloe more than screaming would have.
Megan did not touch her cheek at first. She simply looked at Brian, then at Donna, then at Lily.
Something shut behind her eyes.
Not love.
Not fear.
Maybe both.
Then she moved.
Fast.
Keys.
Car seat.
Phone.
Brian shouted for her to stop.
Donna shouted that Megan was making a scene.
Chloe followed to the doorway, still recording, hands shaking so hard the video blurred.
Megan buckled Lily into the booster seat with trembling fingers and kissed her forehead.
“Stay awake, baby.”
Lily whispered, “I’m cold.”
It was not cold outside.
That was when Chloe understood why Megan was so frightened.
Brian came down the steps.
Donna grabbed Chloe’s wrist and hissed, “Stop filming.”
Chloe pulled free.
She did not know what Megan’s phone call would bring.

She only knew that if everyone lied later, there needed to be something that did not.
