Chapter 10

No police confrontation was shown outside the house.

No one was arrested.

The contents of Chloe’s recording were not revealed.

The identity of the person arriving remained unseen.

The confrontation ended with Megan locked safely inside the parked car, engine running, phone pressed to her ear, and one hand gripping the steering wheel while her feverish daughter shivered in the back seat.

Her cheek was still red from Brian’s slap.

Her breathing was still uneven.

But the fear that had kept her trapped in that house was no longer driving her decisions.

Behind the closed window, Brian stood on the rain-darkened pavement, navy shirt wrinkled, face pale, staring toward the dark vehicles now parked along the suburban street.

Donna stood halfway between the porch and the front door, her fury collapsing into alarm as Chloe continued filming from the steps.

The open front door behind them revealed the warm, ordinary interior of a family home that had stopped feeling safe long before this afternoon.

Lily coughed weakly.

Megan looked back immediately.

“I’m here, baby.”

The calm male voice on the phone said, “Stay in the car. I’m almost there.”

Megan nodded even though he could not see her.

Outside, the headlights brightened across Brian’s face.

He turned toward the approaching figure, and whatever he saw drained the last of his anger from his expression.

For once, Brian did not shout.

Donna did not command.

Chloe did not lower the phone.

Megan did not unlock the doors.

The moment held there—one mother, one sick child, one recorded slap, and one arrival Brian had never prepared for.

Then the screen cut to black before anyone stepped fully into view.
