Chapter 7

Donna tried to regain control through shame.
She stepped off the porch and walked toward the driveway, raincoatless, hair stiff in the cold air, face red with fury.
“Megan,” she called, voice trembling with outrage, “think about what you are doing to your daughter.”
Megan almost laughed.
Almost.
Lily was the reason she had locked the doors.
Lily was the reason she had taken the slap and kept moving.
Lily was the reason she was no longer embarrassed to be seen in pain.
Donna pointed at Chloe again.
“And you. Stop recording adults.”
Chloe backed up until her heel touched the porch rail.
“No.”
The word surprised everyone, including Chloe.
Donna stared at her.
“What did you say?”
Chloe’s voice shook, but she kept the phone up.
“I said no.”
Brian turned.
“Chloe, put it down.”
She looked at him, really looked.
At the man who had helped fix her bike when she was little.
The man who gave her birthday money.
The man who had just slapped his wife while his daughter burned with fever.
Her tears spilled over.
“You hit her.”
Brian’s face hardened.
“That is not your business.”
Chloe swallowed.
“She was trying to take Lily to the hospital.”
Donna snapped, “You don’t understand adult marriage.”
Chloe’s camera stayed pointed at them.
“No, but I understand fever.”
The lead dark vehicle slowed in front of the house.
Two more stopped behind it.
Brian turned back toward the street.
His breathing changed.
Megan watched through the windshield.
She still did not unlock the doors.
She still did not know exactly who would step out.
But she saw Brian lose the certainty that had made him dangerous.

And that was the first safe breath she had taken all day.
