Chapter 5

Arthur answered like he had been waiting beside the phone for two years.

“Rachel?”

I almost could not speak.

Rain slid down my face.

Lily’s hand was still in mine.

Daniel and Patricia stared from the mansion steps.

“Arthur,” I said. “I think I need the letter.”

His breath caught.

Then his voice turned firm.

“Where are you?”

“In the driveway.”

“Daniel?”

“Yes.”

“Patricia?”

“Yes.”

“Lily?”

“With me.”

“Good. Put me on speaker.”

I did.

Arthur’s voice came through the phone, weathered and gentle, but carrying something beneath it that made Daniel shift his weight.

“Rachel, your father knew Daniel would do this.”

Daniel’s face changed as if Arthur had reached through the phone and opened a locked drawer.

Patricia lowered the trash bag.

“What is he talking about?” she snapped.

Arthur ignored her.

“Your father left instructions. If Daniel attempted to remove you from the marital home, restrict access to funds, separate you from Lily, or exploit your injury, I was to activate the Callahan protection file.”

Daniel stepped down one stair.

“Arthur, careful.”

Arthur’s tone sharpened.

“No, Daniel. You be careful.”

My hand tightened around the phone.

“Protection file?”

“Yes, sweetheart.”

The word sweetheart nearly broke me.

My father used to call me that when he was trying not to show fear.

Arthur continued.

“There is a house. Fully accessible. In your name through a trust. Your father purchased it before he died.”

I closed my eyes.

Daniel whispered something I could not hear.

Patricia looked at him.

“You knew?”

His silence answered.

My chest tightened.

“You knew?” I repeated.

Daniel’s jaw flexed.

“Your father was paranoid.”

Arthur said, “Your father was correct.”

Rain tapped against the SUV roof.

Lily looked up at me.

“Grandpa left us a house?”

I touched her wet braid.

“Maybe.”

Arthur corrected me gently.

“Not maybe.”

Daniel’s voice rose.

“She can’t just leave with my daughter.”

Arthur replied, “Rachel is Lily’s mother. And you just threw them both into the rain on a recorded call.”

Daniel looked at my phone like it had become a weapon.
