Chapter 8

The SUV smelled like wet cardboard and fear.

Lily sat in the back seat with her stuffed rabbit, her knees pulled close.

I transferred from the wheelchair into the driver’s seat slowly, teeth clenched against the pain.

Daniel finally moved when he saw me reaching for the folded chair frame.

“I’ll load it.”

I looked at him.

“No.”

His face tightened.

“Rachel.”

“No.”

It was one word.

Small.

Hard.

Mine.

I had accepted help in war zones from people who respected my strength.

Daniel’s help had become another way to measure what I owed him.

I folded the wheelchair myself.

It took longer.

It hurt more.

It was worth it.

Arthur stayed on speaker, silent except for one steady instruction.

“Take your time.”

Patricia muttered, “This is ridiculous.”

Lily shouted from the back seat, “Stop talking about my mom like that!”

The driveway went still.

My daughter’s face was wet with tears, but her chin was lifted.

Daniel looked wounded.

As if Lily had betrayed him by defending me after watching him throw us out.

Patricia said, “Lily, sweetheart—”

“No,” Lily cried. “You threw my rabbit in a box.”

She held it up like evidence.

For the first time, Patricia had no polished answer.

I got the wheelchair loaded.

Closed the hatch.

Rain dotted the window glass.

Arthur said, “Rachel, before you drive, check the glove compartment.”

I opened it.

Inside was a small envelope I had never seen.

My name.

Dad’s handwriting.

My fingers trembled.

“Arthur…”

“He asked me to place it there after the funeral. You were not ready then.”

I opened the envelope just enough to see the first line.

Rae, if you are reading this from the SUV, then he finally showed you who he is.

My breath stopped.

Daniel saw the paper.

His eyes widened.

He had no idea this letter existed.

That frightened him more than the phone call.

My father had reached into the exact moment of betrayal and left his voice there before Daniel ever arrived.

I folded the letter without reading more.

Not yet.
