Chapter 9

Daniel came to the driver’s side window before I could start the engine.
His hair was wet now.
His beard darkened by rain.
He looked less like the man who threw me out and more like the man who once waited outside operating rooms with coffee he forgot to drink.
That was dangerous.
Memories can weaken boundaries if you mistake them for evidence.
He knocked once on the glass.
I lowered it halfway.
Not fully.
“Rachel.”
Lily leaned forward from the back.
Arthur remained on speaker.
Daniel saw that.
“I made a mistake.”
I waited.
He looked toward the mansion, then back at me.
“My mother pushed this too far.”
There it was.
Not responsibility.
Redirection.
I said, “Your mother did not say I was a burden.”
His face tightened.
“I was angry.”
“You were accurate.”
“No.”
“Yes.”
“You said what you have been practicing silently for years.”
He flinched.
Patricia called from the steps, “Daniel, don’t beg.”
That helped.
His shame turned instantly into anger because she named what he feared he was doing.
He looked back at her.
Then at me.
“You can’t take Lily away from me.”
I touched the steering wheel.
“You put her outside with me.”
“I knew you had somewhere to go.”
That sentence fell into the SUV like ice.
Lily whispered, “You knew?”
Daniel’s face changed.
He had not meant to say it.
Arthur’s voice came through the phone, calm and devastating.
“Daniel, that statement has been recorded.”
Daniel stared at the phone.
Then at the envelope in my lap.
Then at my father’s address card.
He understood then.
Not everything.
But enough.
My father had not simply suspected him.
He had planned around him.
The house.
The letter.
The glove compartment.
Arthur.
The recording.
The trust.
All waiting quietly beneath Daniel’s assumption that injured women had fewer exits.
Patricia stepped down one stair, her face pale.
“What did you just say?”
Daniel did not answer.
He was looking at me now with something close to fear.
Not fear of losing me.
May you like
Fear that he had already lost the version of me who kept his secrets soft.
