Chapter 7

Patricia recovered before Daniel did.
That was typical.
She stepped forward with the trash bag still in her hand, her voice suddenly sweet.
“Rachel, no one is saying you and Lily can’t come back after everyone calms down.”
Lily pressed against my wheelchair.
I looked at Patricia.
“You threw her books on the driveway.”
Patricia sighed.
“You always focus on tone instead of reality.”
“No.”
“I focus on what my daughter saw.”
Patricia’s eyes hardened.
“Your daughter needs stability.”
“She had stability before you helped take it from her.”
Daniel said, “Mom, stop.”
It was the same weak stop he had used for years.
The kind that asked Patricia to pause, not change.
Arthur spoke again.
“Daniel, Mr. Callahan also left a sealed financial letter addressed to you.”
Daniel froze.
Patricia turned.
“What letter?”
Daniel did not answer.
My body went cold.
“You knew about that too?”
Daniel rubbed his jaw.
“Your father sent me things when he was sick.”
“What things?”
“Accusations.”
Arthur said, “Warnings.”
Daniel looked furious now.
“He had no right.”
Arthur replied, “He had every right to protect his daughter.”
I looked at Daniel.
“What did the letter say?”
Arthur interrupted gently.
“Rachel, not in the driveway.”
I understood.
Not because he was hiding it from me.
Because my father had been right again.
Daniel wanted the driveway to become a courtroom where I was tired, wet, in pain, and desperate.
He wanted me to react.
Cry.
Scream.
Look unstable.
I took one breath.
Then another.
“Lily,” I said, “get in the SUV.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“She is not leaving.”
I looked at him.
“She is not staying here while you decide whether we deserve shelter.”
His eyes flashed.
For one second, I saw the version of him he usually kept behind doors.
Then he remembered Arthur was listening.
He stepped back.
Lily climbed into the SUV, still holding her rabbit.
I wheeled myself toward the open hatch.
Pain shot through my leg.
I kept moving.
Daniel watched me struggle.
He did not help.

That made leaving easier.
