Chapter 1

I Locked My Wife on the Balcony After My Sister Accused Her of Stealing $8,000—Then Her Wedding Ring and One Note Exposed the Real Betrayal.

Liam Bennett stood inside the warm Grand Rapids apartment with a glass of red wine in his hand while his wife froze outside in her wedding dress.

Beyond the locked sliding door, Nora knelt barefoot in the balcony snow, soaked white fabric clinging to her body, wet brown hair stuck to her tear-streaked face.

She pounded one trembling hand weakly against the glass.

Beside Liam, his sister Gwen smiled and lifted her wineglass.

“She stole eight thousand dollars from you.”

Liam looked at Nora through the glass.

Anger made him stupid.

Pain made him cruel.

He lowered his wineglass and pressed one hand against the locked door handle without opening it.

“Stay outside until you tell me the truth.”

Nora reached toward him through the glass, fingers shaking from cold.

“I never stole from you.”

Liam’s smile faded.

“Then who received the money?”

Nora’s eyes moved past him.

Straight to Gwen.

“Ask your sister.”

Gwen’s glass froze halfway to her lips.

Nora removed her wedding ring with stiff fingers and placed it beside a folded cream note in the snow.

Then she slipped downward out of Liam’s view.

Liam finally unlocked the door and threw it open.

Snow rushed inside.

On the balcony, he found only the ring, the unopened note, and one wet handprint on the railing.

Then he saw wet shoe prints crossing the apartment floor.

From the hallway.

Toward the balcony.

Prints that did not match Nora’s bare feet.

Slowly, Liam turned toward Gwen.
