Chapter 7

Gwen set her wineglass down too carefully.
That was how Liam knew she was afraid.
When Gwen was angry, she slammed things.
When Gwen was innocent, she demanded apologies.
When Gwen was afraid, she became elegant.
“Liam,” she said softly, “you’re emotional.”
He held Nora’s ring in his palm.
“Why are your shoes wet?”
Gwen looked down as if noticing for the first time.
“It’s snowing everywhere.”
“Inside the hallway?”
She laughed once.
Thin.
Unconvincing.
“I came from the lobby.”
“You said you were here before we arrived.”
Her eyes flicked toward the note.
He saw it.
The note mattered.
Maybe more than the ring.
Maybe more than the money.
Liam took one step toward her.
“What is in the note?”
Gwen’s face tightened.
“How would I know?”
“Because you told me not to touch it.”
Silence.
The city lights blinked beyond the balcony.
Cold air poured into the apartment.
Somewhere down the hall, a neighbor’s door opened, then closed.
No police investigation began.
No final explanation arrived.
Only the first real question.
Liam looked at the wet shoe prints again.
Then at Gwen.
“She said ask your sister.”
Gwen’s hand closed around her necklace.
For the first time in his life, Liam did not hear protection in her silence.

He heard guilt trying to choose a shape.
