Chapter 2

The accusation began before the last wedding candle burned out.

Liam and Nora had not even changed out of their wedding clothes.

The reception had ended early because of the snowstorm, and the after-party moved upstairs to Liam’s high-rise apartment overlooking the frozen city.

Nora was exhausted.

Her dress was wet at the hem from the parking garage.

Her makeup had softened from crying happy tears earlier.

She wanted tea, dry socks, and ten minutes alone with her new husband.

Instead, Gwen arrived with a crisis.

Eight thousand dollars was missing from Liam’s emergency account.

Gwen said she had checked the transfer alerts.

Gwen said Nora had been near Liam’s phone.

Gwen said new wives sometimes became bold once the ring was secure.

Nora stared at her.

“That is disgusting.”

Gwen looked wounded.

“I’m trying to protect my brother.”

That sentence always worked on Liam.

Gwen had raised him after their mother died.

Gwen had paid bills when their father disappeared.

Gwen had chosen his college applications, his first apartment, even the color of his first suit.

So when Gwen said protect, Liam heard love.

When Nora said trust me, Liam heard panic.

That was his failure.

He asked Nora where the money went.

She said she did not know.

Gwen said liars always answer too quickly.

The storm thickened outside.

The apartment grew warmer inside.

Then Gwen looked toward the balcony and said, “Maybe cold air will help her remember.”
