Chapter 3

Nora stepped onto the balcony because she believed Liam would never truly lock her out.
That was the saddest part.
She thought he was angry.
She thought he was frightened.
She thought Gwen had confused him.
She did not think he would close the glass door and turn the lock.
But he did.
The click was small.
Final.
Snow blew against Nora’s bare shoulders.
She turned instantly.
“Liam?”
He stood inside with Gwen behind him, both framed by warm amber light and beige curtains.
The city skyline glittered beyond the falling snow.
Nora pressed one palm to the glass.
“Open the door.”
Gwen lifted her wineglass and smiled.
“Tell the truth first.”
“I am telling the truth.”
Liam’s jaw tightened.
“Where is the money?”
“I don’t know.”
Gwen leaned close to his ear.
“She’s acting.”
Nora saw it.
The whisper.
The hand on Liam’s arm.
The way Gwen watched Nora not like a sister-in-law, but like someone waiting for a plan to finish.
That was when fear changed shape.
Nora was cold, yes.
Humiliated, yes.
But she also began to see the room differently.
Gwen’s shoes were damp.
Her hem had melted snow on it.
But Gwen had not gone outside.
Nora looked down through the glass.
Wet footprints crossed the apartment floor from the hallway toward the balcony.
Not bare feet.
Not hers.
Shoes.
May you like
Gwen’s shoes.
