Chapter 10 - the night Nora lost six hours

Nora remembered fragments.
Graham’s birthday.
Judith handing her lemonade.
Music.
Peter laughing.
Then the kitchen tilting.
She had thought she was sick.
Next memory:
Morning.
Her own bed.
Graham beside her.
Her shoulder aching.
He said:
“You slipped in the garage.”
Now police reconstructed the missing six hours.
Security footage showed Nora leaving Judith’s house supported by Graham and Peter.
Judith followed carrying Nora’s purse.
At St. Vincent, Nora was placed in a wheelchair.
A nurse ordered toxicology because Nora’s level of impairment seemed inconsistent with her reported alcohol intake.
Dr. Shaw arrived.
He spoke privately with Graham.
Ten minutes later, the toxicology order was canceled.
Nora received imaging.
The shoulder injury was documented.
Then the family left.
The nurse who treated Nora still worked at St. Vincent.
Her name was Hannah Doyle.
She remembered the case because something bothered her.
“The husband kept saying she was embarrassed.”
Detective Hart asked:
“Was Mrs. Hale able to speak?”
“Barely.”
“Did she decline testing?”
“I never heard her decline.”
“Did Dr. Shaw?”
“He told us the family wanted conservative care.”
Nora stared.
“You let them take me home?”
Hannah looked genuinely ashamed.
“I believed the physician knew the family history.”
Nora did not blame her.
Graham and Judith had used trust.
Doctor.
Husband.
Mother-in-law.
A coherent story.
Nora was the only person unable to speak for herself.
Hart asked:
“Did anything else seem unusual?”
Hannah thought.
“Yes.”
“The husband asked whether the visit would automatically generate a police report.”
Nora’s stomach tightened.
“What did you say?”
“That accidental injuries do not necessarily.”
“And?”
“He looked relieved.”
Graham was confronted with the footage.
He asked for Nora.
She refused.
He eventually agreed to speak.
“I didn’t drug her.”
Hart replied:
“Who did?”
“I don’t know.”
“Your mother prepared the drink.”
“I didn’t see her put anything in it.”
“But you knew Nora was unusually impaired.”
“Yes.”
“You took her to a hospital.”
“Yes.”
“You let Dr. Shaw cancel toxicology.”
Graham looked down.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Mom said if the test found something, police would ask questions.”
Hart stared.
“So you knew there might be something to find.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you protect your wife?”
Graham’s eyes filled.
“I was afraid.”
“Of Judith?”
“Of everything.”
Nora watched the video later.
She felt no sympathy.
Fear explained silence.
It did not excuse repeated betrayal.
Then Hart asked the question Elise wanted answered.
“What happened after you left St. Vincent?”
Graham stopped.
“What do you mean?”
“You drove Nora home.”
“Yes.”
“Directly?”
Silence.
Hart leaned forward.
“Where did you go?”
Graham’s face changed.
Nora felt cold.
He whispered:
“My office.”
“Why?”
“Mom wanted photographs.”
Nora stared.
“What photographs?”
Hart asked the same.
Graham swallowed.
“She said Nora needed to look incapable.”
Nora’s pulse hammered.
“What did you do?”
Graham confessed.
He carried his barely conscious wife into his home office.
Placed her on a couch.
Put an open bottle of wine nearby.
Scattered pills on the table.
Photographed her.
Those were the images later found in the INCIDENTS folder.
Nora closed her eyes.
He had staged evidence while she could barely stay awake.
Not Judith.
Not Peter.
Graham.
His hands.
His camera.
His choice.
Hart asked:
“Did your mother force you?”
“No.”
“Did Dr. Shaw?”
“No.”
“Then why?”
Graham began crying.
“Because I thought if Nora signed the trust paperwork, everything would stop.”
Nora whispered to Maya:
“He traded me for money.”
Maya did not correct her.
Because that was exactly what it looked like.
But Hart was not finished.
“What happened to Nora’s shoulder?”
Graham stared.
“She fell.”
“Where?”
He looked away.
“Graham.”
His voice broke.
“In my office.”
“How?”
“I was trying to move her.”
“Did you drop her?”
Silence.
“Yes.”
Nora’s stomach turned.
The shoulder injury had not happened at Judith’s house.
Graham caused it while staging fake evidence of Nora’s instability.
Then blamed her.
Then let Dr. Shaw record an accidental fall.
One of the mysterious fractures was finally explained.
But the rib injury remained.
So did the wrist.
May you like
And Graham insisted he had not caused those.
👉 Graham admitted causing Nora’s shoulder injury while staging photographs of her as unstable—but two older fractures still had no explanation.
