Chapter 6 - the woman before Nora

Nora believed the messages were the worst thing she could discover.
Then Detective Hart asked a strange question.
“Did Graham ever tell you he was engaged before?”
Nora frowned.
“No.”
“Married?”
“No.”
Hart placed an old newspaper clipping on the table.
LOCAL TEACHER MISSING AFTER BLUE RIDGE HIKING ACCIDENT.
The woman in the photograph was twenty-nine.
Blonde.
Warm smile.
Name:
Elise Warren.
Hart slid another page forward.
Engagement announcement.
ELISE WARREN AND GRAHAM HALE TO WED.
Nora stared.
“They were engaged?”
“Seven years before you met him.”
“What happened?”
“Elise disappeared during a weekend trip in North Carolina.”
“Body?”
“Never recovered.”
Nora felt cold.
“Who was with her?”
Hart did not need to answer.
Graham.
Judith.
Peter.
A family hiking weekend.
Graham told investigators Elise walked ahead after an argument.
Her jacket was found near a river.
Police believed she fell into fast water.
No charges.
Nora asked:
“Why are you looking at this now?”
“Because Elise had medical records.”
Hart showed them.
Wrist injury.
Rib injury.
Shoulder injury.
Three separate incidents during the year before she disappeared.
All described as falls.
One consulting physician:
Dr. Malcolm Shaw.
Nora covered her mouth.
The pattern was almost identical.
Hart continued.
“Elise also had significant assets.”
“What kind?”
“Her father owned a regional trucking company. She inherited shares.”
Nora whispered:
“Did Graham have access?”
“No. They weren’t married.”
“Then why target her?”
Hart hesitated.
“We don’t know that he did.”
But Elise had broken off the engagement eleven days before the hiking trip.
Her sister, Caroline Warren, produced an old email.
ELISE:
Graham keeps asking me to put him on the company paperwork. Judith says marriage means sharing everything. I told them no.
Another:
I woke up bruised again after dinner at Judith’s. They said I slipped.
Nora stared.
Same house.
Same family.
Same explanation.
Caroline had told police at the time that she distrusted Graham.
Investigators found no evidence Elise was harmed.
Now Hart reopened contact.
Caroline arrived in Savannah the next day.
The moment she saw Nora in the brace, she began crying.
“That’s how Elise looked.”
Nora went still.
“What?”
“Always bruised.”
Caroline sat across from her.
“My sister thought she was getting sick.”
“What kind of sick?”
“She became dizzy at family dinners.”
Nora’s stomach tightened.
“She would lose time?”
Caroline looked up sharply.
“Yes.”
Nora and Maya exchanged a glance.
Caroline continued.
“Elise told me Judith kept saying she was too fragile for Graham.”
“What about Dr. Shaw?”
“He told her she was stressed.”
“Did Elise ever mention medical records?”
“She said once that Graham knew things a doctor had written before she’d told him.”
Nora felt cold.
Elise had begun documenting the family.
Just as Nora was now.
Then Caroline handed Nora a small envelope.
“I found this after Elise disappeared.”
Inside was a photograph.
Sunday dinner at Judith’s house.
Elise stood near the same basement staircase.
Nora stared.
“What am I looking at?”
Caroline pointed.
The basement door.
A small security camera mounted high in the corner.
Nora’s pulse quickened.
“That camera isn’t there now.”
“No.”
“Was it there when Elise disappeared?”
“I don’t know.”
Caroline turned the photograph over.
Elise’s handwriting:
JUDITH RECORDS EVERYTHING EXCEPT WHAT SHE WANTS FORGOTTEN.
Nora looked at Detective Hart.
“If that camera existed then…”
Hart understood.
“There may have been older recordings.”
“Where?”
Nobody knew.
But Peter might.
Because records showed the Hale family’s home-security system had been installed by a company Peter owned.
Detective Hart obtained a warrant.
In Peter’s warehouse, technicians found boxes of retired security equipment.
One hard drive was labeled:
JH RESIDENCE — ARCHIVE.
Judith Hale residence.
Years covered:
2017–2020.
