Chapter 5 - why Judith needed seven weeks
The court issued an emergency order preventing Graham from acting on Nora’s trust interests.
He was also ordered to stay away from Nora while the assault investigation continued.
Judith was charged with battery related to the staircase shove.
Her attorney described the incident as “a regrettable family confrontation.”
Patricia disagreed.
She gave police a full statement.
“Judith followed Nora intentionally.”
“Did you see the push?”
“Yes.”
“With one hand or two?”
“Two.”
“Did Nora stumble before contact?”
“No.”
“Did Judith try to catch her?”
“No.”
“What did Judith do afterward?”
Patricia hesitated.
“She looked at Graham.”
Nora leaned forward when Officer Hart repeated the statement.
“At Graham?”
“Yes.”
“What kind of look?”
“Patricia described it as waiting for something.”
That disturbed Nora.
Judith pushed.
Then looked at Graham.
As if expecting the next step.
Graham came downstairs and told Nora to keep it in the family.
No ambulance call.
No confrontation.
No shock.
Only containment.
Maya examined the trust again.
“There’s something we missed.”
Nora looked over.
“If you become legally incapacitated before your birthday, voting control doesn’t transfer directly to Graham.”
“Good.”
“It stays with the existing trustee.”
Nora frowned.
“Who is that?”
She knew the trust company managed investments.
But one individual had special approval power over real-estate sales.
Maya found the name.
Judith Hale.
Nora stared.
“That’s impossible.”
“Your father appointed her?”
“No.”
“Then the trust was amended.”
They located the amendment.
Executed three years earlier.
Nora’s supposed signature appeared.
Judith was named temporary family liaison if Nora became medically incapacitated.
Nora felt nauseated.
“I never signed this.”
Maya compared signatures.
Another forgery.
But this one had been notarized.
Notary:
Peter Calloway.
Judith’s brother.
The quiet uncle from the urgent-care video.
Nora whispered:
“Oh my God.”
The conspiracy was older than the injuries.
Maya immediately contacted the Bennett trustees.
They froze all pending changes.
Then Nora remembered something.
Three years earlier, Graham had asked her to sign several refinancing documents at home.
Peter had stopped by.
Nora signed only two pages.
Could they have inserted another later?
Possible.
But the signature still looked wrong.
The amendment created a narrow seven-week window.
If Nora remained legally competent until her thirty-sixth birthday, the liaison clause ended.
Full voting control transferred directly to her.
Judith would lose access.
Graham would have no direct authority.
Seven weeks.
Sunday dinner had not been random.
Judith was running out of time.
Nora stared at the calendar.
“She pushed me because the first plan wasn’t working fast enough.”
Maya said:
“We can’t prove motive solely from timing.”
“But that’s what it was.”

Officer Hart discovered another clue.
Judith had searched online the previous month for:

None proved assault.
Together they showed intent.
Then police obtained messages between Judith and Graham.
JUDITH:
We have seven weeks.
GRAHAM:
I know.
JUDITH:
Shaw says documentation is still too weak.
GRAHAM:
Then we need another event.
Nora stopped reading.
Her hands shook.
“Another event.”
Maya looked sick.
The message was dated five days before Sunday dinner.
Then:
JUDITH:
Family will be there.
GRAHAM:
Do not do anything stupid.
JUDITH:
Stop pretending you don’t understand.
No response.
Nora stared.
“Graham knew.”
Maya nodded cautiously.
“He knew she was considering something. We don’t yet know exactly what.”
Nora read the final message from that morning.
GRAHAM:
Keep it controlled.
Judith had replied:
I always do.

Three hours later, Nora went down the basement stairs.
