Chapter 8 - what Graham said happened in North Carolina

Graham’s attorney arranged a formal interview.

For the first time, Graham admitted he had hidden his engagement to Elise from Nora.

“She disappeared.”

Detective Hart replied:

“That isn’t an explanation.”

“I didn’t want to live inside it forever.”

“Did you hurt her?”

“No.”

“Did your mother?”

“No.”

“Why was Elise’s engagement ring in Judith’s safe?”

Graham looked genuinely shocked.

“I don’t know.”

“Why was Elise’s USB drive there?”

His expression changed.

He knew the drive.

Hart noticed.

“What was on it?”

“I don’t know.”

“You recognized it.”

“Elise used a drive like that.”

“For what?”

“Work.”

Hart placed the message on the table.

IF I DISAPPEAR, GRAHAM KNOWS.

Graham closed his eyes.

“I didn’t kill Elise.”

“Then what do you know?”

He said nothing.

Hart waited.

Eventually:

“Elise was planning to leave.”

“We know.”

“She thought Mom was trying to control her.”

“Was she?”

“Yes.”

The admission surprised everyone.

“Did you participate?”

Graham looked down.

“I let things happen.”

Nora watched from another room.

The words sounded familiar.

Not responsibility.

Passive language.

Things happened.

Not I lied.

I manipulated.

I watched.

Graham continued.

“Elise got hurt at Mom’s house. Mom said they were accidents.”

“Did you believe that?”

“At first.”

“And later?”

Graham stared at his hands.

“I didn’t want to know.”

Hart’s voice hardened.

“What happened in North Carolina?”

Graham took a long breath.

“Elise confronted me.”

“About?”

“The USB drive.”

“What was on it?”

“She said records. Mom’s records. Shaw’s.”

“Did you see them?”

“No.”

“She told me she was going to police.”

“Then?”

“We argued.”

“Where?”

“Near the trail.”

“Then?”

“She walked away.”

“You followed?”

“Yes.”

“How far?”

“To the river overlook.”

“Was Judith there?”

“No.”

“Peter?”

“No.”

“What happened?”

Graham’s voice became almost inaudible.

“Elise slipped.”

Hart stared.

“You expect us to believe that?”

“I grabbed her.”

“Did she fall into the water?”

“No.”

Everyone froze.

The official story said Elise fell into the river.

Hart leaned closer.

“Where did she go?”

Graham’s eyes filled.

“She ran.”

“What?”

“She got away from me.”

“Then why report that she fell into the river?”

“Because Mom told me to.”

Nora stood.

Caroline covered her mouth.

Detective Hart’s voice became cold.

“You filed a false missing-person report.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Mom said if Elise surfaced, we’d deal with it then. If she didn’t, the river story protected us.”

“Protected you from what?”

“The injuries.”

“The records?”

“Yes.”

“Where did Elise go?”

“I don’t know.”

“You expect us to believe she vanished voluntarily for seven years?”

“I swear.”

“What about her jacket and phone?”

“Mom planted them.”

Nora felt sick.

Graham had let the world believe a woman died.

Her sister mourned her.

Police searched a river.

All because the Hale family wanted to control the narrative.

Hart asked:

“Did you know Judith had Elise’s ring?”

“No.”

“The USB?”

“No.”

“Did you know Elise was alive after the hiking trip?”

Graham hesitated.

Too long.

Hart saw it.

“When did you last hear from her?”

Graham whispered:

“Two years later.”

Caroline gasped.

Nora stared.

Elise had contacted him.

“What did she say?”

“She told me never to look for her.”

“Anything else?”

“She said Mom would destroy the next woman too.”

Nora stopped breathing.

The next woman.

Her.

Detective Hart asked:

“And then you married Nora.”

Graham looked toward the mirrored glass.

As if he knew she was behind it.

“I thought things would be different.”

Nora’s face hardened.

They had not been.

Graham had received a warning from the woman before her.

And instead of protecting Nora—

May you like

he had repeated the pattern.

👉 Graham admitted Elise survived the supposed hiking death and had personally warned him that Judith would target the next woman he loved.
