Chapter 1

Mother Returns After Twenty Months and Finds Her Neglected Four-Year-Old Crawling Beneath the Family Table While Her Husband’s Secret Lover and Son Take His Place.
I came home from Seattle carrying a suitcase full of toys for my son.
A red fire engine.
A stuffed dinosaur.
Three picture books about airplanes because Micah had once believed every plane crossing the sky was bringing me home.
At the bottom of the suitcase was a wooden truck.
His favorite kind.
The same little toy he was crawling toward when I found him beneath the dining table.
The formal dining room glittered under a crystal chandelier. Gold-trimmed chairs surrounded an ornate table covered with expensive china, polished glassware, roasted meat, fresh bread, and flowers arranged as if someone were photographing a perfect family.
My family.
Except I was not in the picture.
Graham sat at the head of the table in a black suit, lifting a crystal glass while Sabrina Cole occupied my chair beside him.
Her son Theo sat between Sabrina and my mother-in-law, Lorraine, wearing a spotless formal outfit.
A second well-dressed child sat beside him.
And on the carpet beneath them, my four-year-old son crawled through crumbs in clothing too small for his body.
His face was dirty.
His hair tangled.
His knees visible through worn fabric.
He reached for an old wooden truck with one wheel missing.
Lorraine lifted a silver fork toward Theo’s mouth and smiled.
“Now that is a child this family can be proud of.”
I pushed the dining-room door fully open.
My suitcase rolled forward and stopped against the marble.
Every glass at the table went still.
Graham lowered his drink.
Sabrina straightened.
Lorraine turned toward me with irritation instead of surprise.
Then Micah looked up.
For one terrible second, he did not recognize me.
I released the suitcase handle.
It struck the floor.
“Micah… Mommy’s home.”
He froze.
Then raised one arm over his head as though expecting me to hit him.
My heart stopped.
I lowered myself beside him slowly.
He flinched when my hand moved.
So I removed my cream cardigan and wrapped it around his thin shoulders without touching his skin more than necessary.
Sabrina rose halfway from her chair.
“Keep him away from Theo.”
Graham stood so quickly his chair fell backward.
“Audrey, don’t make a scene.”
I looked at him.
Twenty months of missed calls, broken video connections, excuses, and carefully selected photographs rearranged themselves inside my mind.
I lifted Micah against my chest.
His body stiffened.
Then one tiny hand gripped my blouse.
I extended my other hand toward Graham’s water glass.
“Bring me water.”
He hesitated.
I took out my phone.
“Naomi,” I said when the emergency line connected, “freeze every account Graham touched.”
Lorraine’s fork fell onto her plate.
Sabrina’s smile vanished.
Graham stared at me as if I had spoken in a language he had never heard.

And for the first time since entering the room, Micah rested his head against my shoulder.
