Chapter 7

Lorraine tried to recover control through dignity.
That was her favorite weapon.
She folded her napkin and placed it beside her plate.
“Audrey, this family has endured twenty months of your absence.”
I looked at her.
“My absence funded this table.”
Her eyes narrowed.
“Money does not raise a child.”
“No.”
I glanced at Micah.
“Neither did you.”
The second child beside Theo began crying softly.
Sabrina pulled both children closer, creating the image she wanted everyone to see.
A protective mother.
An unstable intruder.
Except we were in my house.
Micah was in my arms.
And Naomi was listening.
Lorraine said, “Micah needed discipline.”
“What kind?”
“He refused meals.”
I looked at the feast.
“Because he was beneath the table?”
“He chose to sit there.”
Micah’s fingers dug into my blouse.
Children do not hide from voices without reasons.
I forced my breathing to remain slow.
“Why are there marks around his wrists?”
Graham stepped between me and Lorraine.
“You are seeing what you want to see.”
“No.”
“I am seeing what you needed me never to see.”
Naomi’s voice came through the phone.
“Audrey, the house cameras were disabled eleven months ago.”
Graham turned toward the phone.
“That system malfunctioned.”
“The internal logs show administrative shutdown using your credential.”
Sabrina looked at him.
“You said the cameras were broken.”
He did not answer.
Naomi continued.
“Household staff payroll ended during the same week. Three employees were dismissed under Audrey’s electronic signature.”
My stomach dropped.
“I signed nothing.”
“We know.”
Lorraine’s face changed.
The staff had not left naturally.
They had been removed.
No witnesses.
No cameras.
No preschool.
No doctor.
Only Graham, Lorraine, Sabrina, and two children treated as family while Micah disappeared inside his own home.
A sound came from the hallway.
The front door opening.
Graham moved toward the dining-room entrance.
Naomi stopped him through the phone.
“Do not leave the room.”
He laughed harshly.
“You cannot order me around in my own house.”
A woman’s voice answered from the doorway.
“No, but I can.”
Naomi Pierce entered carrying a leather folder, followed by a pediatric nurse and a private child advocate.
Graham looked from Naomi to me.
Then toward the silent phone in my hand.
The money had been frozen.
The house had witnesses again.
May you like
And the story he had built around my son had begun collapsing before anyone raised their voice.
