Chapter 5

Micah’s first reaction to me was fear.

That was the wound I could not forgive.

I knelt several feet away.

“Micah… Mommy’s home.”

He looked at my face.

Then at Graham.

Then Lorraine.

He raised one arm over his head.

Protection.

Practiced protection.

I felt something inside me tear, but I forced my body to remain gentle.

Children who expect harm do not need adults moving quickly because they are angry.

I placed my cardigan on the carpet between us.

“This is for you.”

Micah stared at it.

He did not reach.

Behind me, Sabrina said, “He has behavioral problems.”

I ignored her.

“Micah, may I come closer?”

His eyes filled, but he did not speak.

I moved one knee forward.

Then waited.

His gaze dropped to my blouse.

A tiny crease appeared between his brows.

Memory.

I wore cream blouses often before Seattle.

He used to hide his face against them when strangers spoke too loudly.

I opened my arms.

He crawled once.

Stopped.

Then crawled again.

When I wrapped the cardigan around him, his whole body tightened.

I did not pull him immediately against me.

I waited until he chose.

His fingers touched my sleeve.

Then gripped.

I lifted him slowly.

He weighed less than he should have.

Far less.

His shirt was too small, stretched tightly across narrow shoulders.

As I adjusted the cardigan, I saw faint marks around his wrists.

Graham said, “Audrey, don’t make a scene.”

I turned toward him.

He still had not looked directly at Micah.

Not once.

“Bring me water.”

“What?”

“My son needs water.”

Lorraine set down her fork.

“He had juice earlier.”

Micah flinched at her voice.

That answered more than her words.

Sabrina rose protectively beside Theo.

“Keep him away from Theo.”

I looked at her.

“You are sitting in my chair.”

Her face changed.

Graham stepped forward.

“This is my house too.”

Micah’s fingers tightened in my blouse.

I held him closer.

“No.”

One word.

Quiet.

Final.

I took out my phone and activated the emergency contact Naomi had programmed months earlier.

“Freeze every account Graham touched.”

Graham moved toward me.

I raised one hand.

He stopped.

Not because I was stronger.

Because he finally understood I had returned with information.
