Chapter 8

The nurse approached Micah slowly.
She introduced herself as Rebecca and asked permission before touching him.
That alone seemed to confuse him.
“May I look at your hand?”
Micah did not respond.
He looked at me.
I nodded gently.
“Only if you want.”
After several seconds, he extended two fingers from beneath the cardigan.
Rebecca did not pull his arm.
She examined what he offered.
“Good job,” she whispered.
Micah stared at her.
Praise appeared unfamiliar.
My anger sharpened.
Naomi opened the leather folder but did not place anything on the table yet.
She looked around the room.
At Sabrina.
Theo.
Lorraine.
Graham.
Then Micah.
Her professional expression cracked for half a second.
She had known him as a laughing toddler who once poured apple juice into her handbag.
Now he would not speak.
Graham pointed toward Naomi.
“You have no authority to enter.”
“The property trustee authorized access.”
“I am the homeowner.”
“No.”
Naomi said it simply.
“The Keller Family Residence Trust owns the property. Audrey is the sole controlling beneficiary.”
Lorraine looked at Graham.
“You said the transfer was complete.”
I stared at him.
“What transfer?”
His face tightened.
Naomi continued before he could answer.
“Graham submitted documents seeking permanent management authority while Audrey was working in Seattle.”
Sabrina went pale.
Graham snapped, “She abandoned the residence.”
“I was on a corporate assignment.”
“You were gone twenty months.”
“You begged me to take it.”
“For the company.”
“No.”
Naomi looked directly at him.
“For access.”
The room became very still.
The Seattle division had not merely been a career opportunity.
It had been distance Graham could use.
Time to isolate Micah.
Move Sabrina into the mansion.
Establish Theo as part of the household.
Create financial records suggesting I no longer managed the property or family.
And then, perhaps, argue that I had abandoned them.
I held Micah tighter.
He shifted, uncomfortable.
I loosened my arms immediately.
“Sorry, baby.”
His fingers touched the military-style button on my blouse.
Then, for the first time, he whispered one word.
“Mommy.”
Everything inside me stopped.
I pressed my cheek against his hair.
“I’m here.”
Across the table, Graham lowered his eyes.
Not from guilt.

Because the son he had erased had spoken the one word that destroyed his entire story.
